I normally do the Super Hard puzzle from BrainBashers every day but I do not kept notes, and today was no exception. I do remember it was a very long solution path with some x-wings on <5> & <7>, a finned x-wing (or two), some XYZ-wings, a Type 1 UR, and probably an xy-wing. I was considering doing it again to look for a more direct solution, but .........

I did not see other than the long and winding road on this one. Except, the two X-wings to start are very obvious.

Yes, I do remember that two different x-wings patterns existed on <7> initially, and both made identical deletions. That was interesting ......

hmm, wonder if brainbashers is starting to realize that slightly harder puzzles generate more buzz.
this puzzle is impressive with the number of stops and starts it contains. kind of wonder how many VHs to date had this many steps, without going beyond x,xy,xyz-wing.
I foresee more brainbashers in this section of the forum.
oh and just for kicks, the x-wing on 5 can also be seen as a xy-loop... it does the exact same eliminations but the pattern is at least there. |

The x-wing for 5 eliminates 7 5's, the UR 56 two more, followed by an xy-wing 456 to get rid of the 10th 5.

Here i noticed that the x-wing for 7 also eliminates the 8 in r3c2 from the UR 78, though the 8 in r8c2 is already missing from the locked candidates in row 7.
It does not help much, but makes the xyz-wing 178 an xy-wing. |

I got this far, and can see where the 56 UR would be but can't see how it works - did I miss an elimination somewhere? Thanks.

You have to find the hidden pair in C8 to reveal the UR.

You have to find the hidden pair in C8 to reveal the UR.

If you have trouble with hidden pairs, like I do, try looking for the complementary naked quad instead. |

What a most excellent sudoku !
I used two x-wings on 7.
At least two more on 5.
An ER on 5.
Another on 8
A skyscraper on 8.
And finally… an xyz wing - that was probably there all the time.
R5C5 was easy though. |

| I used a couple of X-Wings, two XY-Wings, broke up a DP, had one ER and a W-Wing on 58. Then coloring one of the pincers finished it off. |
