First I want to make clear that I'm speaking as an individual member who enjoys doing some of the puzzles posted here, not as a moderator. And second, I hope nobody is offended, as my intent is not to criticize.

I presume the givens are typed into a word processing program and spacing is done so the grid will be aligned. If this is the case, using Draw/Play might be less effort, as spacing is done automatically.

When the grid comes from Draw/Play, the reader can play the puzzle online with one click or print it out with a couple of clicks. My personal preference is to print out the puzzle rather than writing the givens onto a blank grid. I haven't talked to others about this and have no idea if anyone else agrees.

This is not an earth-shattering issue and I won't be offended in the slightest if nothing changes.

Thanks.

I agree with Marty.....my two cents!

I really like being able to click on the "Play on line" link...It's faster and then I don't have to worry that I made a mistake copying the puzzle. And I like that if I'm a little late to the party I can just click the link without inadvertently reading some of the discussion.

PS....Just noticed Danny posted a "Click to Play" link with all the possibilities filled in...which is fine....but I just wanted to mention that I'm OK with just the original puzzle.....Again, just my two cents!

Well, being inexperienced at creating clickable puzzles, I found a posting and analyzed the format of the URL link.

I manually edit a PM of my puzzle to create a URL link in the format that I observed in that posting. Finally, I pasted the link into my message.

Some Sudoku sites provide a blank line in which to paste a string representing your puzzle. I saw no such mechanism at this site. It's tedious and awkward, but I'm willing to save others the trouble of transcribing my puzzles.

Danny, thanks. Puzzles can't be imported here. But take a look at my post on how to align a grid in the Site Help sub-forum and see if that makes it any easier for you.

In the meantime, I hope that this little HTML page will help. I've opened a thread in the "Site help" section for feedback.

What Danny means, I believe, is you CAN "import" a puzzle. Here is the link to the last DB puzzle posted by Earl:

http://www.dailysudoku.com/sudoku/play.shtml?p=5:8:0:0:0:0:9:4:0:0:0:4:0:5:0:0:8:0:0:0:3:8:1:0:5:0:0:0:
0:9:0:0:6:0:7:0:0:2:0:0:0:0:0:3:0:0:7:0:9:0:0:1:0:0:
0:0:6:0:2:7:4:0:0:0:3:0:0:9:0:7:0:0:0:4:7:0:0:0:0:2:5:

(Line breaks entered by me to enhance readability.)

Keith

So, figure out how to compose the "p=" part, you are all set.

Nice tool, nataraj.

I had written 3 lines C-code to add the address and the colons to a puzzle. But i only have it available on my linux PC.

Thx, ravel!

Me, too, I started with a few lines I added to my existing program (to create the [url...] part). I had already written a piece of code to import well structured grids (essentially the one from draw/play and the 81 digit line).

Then I went on a trip and wanted to take a few puzzles from the "other puzzles" pages and from ruud's site and I used my program not to solve but just to format for the draw/play function. I really like the grid size and the font in hte daily sudokus...

Never made it into a stand-alone version until last night.

I prefer the HTML/javascript combination because it is simple, straightforward, and - thin client. No installation, no distribution and - at least with Firefox - no security issues (can't even access the clipboard or the DOM objects of remote pages. bit of a pain sometimes).

Here's another one (BrainBashers):

http://www.brainbashers.com/printsudoku.asp?q=.2..8..6.8..934..7..7...3...3.418.5.54.2.9.73.1.573.4...3...4..9..841..6.8..5..9.&text=November+14%2C+2008+-+Super+Hard&size=&copyright=Y&sudokuref=270231&pencilmarks=N

where you could "trick" it with your own string.

Nice job, Nataraj! I checked the three BrainBashers export formats, they all work in your tool. Except for the unnecessary use of color, the BrainBashers printed puzzles are, I think, fine.

The "Daily Sudoku Competition" printout is AWFUL.

http://www.sudoku.org.uk/Daily.asp

Nataraj, You can left-mouse scroll over their puzzle and select the digits, but your tool does not work. Let me just say, you can paste them into Sudoku Susser just fine!

Best wishes,

Keith

Awful in what way? I think it's fine. Just click the printable version, adjust size using Print Preview and I get a nice grid just as good as here or Brain Bashers or Menneske. Question Question

Marty, my man ... you solved the problem for me!

Click on "printable version" and select and copy the puzzle from there.
It will import into dailysudoku.com draw/play like a charm.

Just did it a minute ago. Result:

Code:

+-------+-------+-------+
| 7 . . | 6 . 5 | . . 1 |
| . . . | 1 . . | 2 4 7 |
| . . . | . . . | 9 . . |
+-------+-------+-------+
| . . . | . . . | 3 8 . |
| . . 2 | 3 . 1 | 6 . . |
| . 6 8 | . . . | . . . |
+-------+-------+-------+
| . . 4 | . . . | . . 9 |
| 2 7 3 | . . 4 | . . . |
| 9 . . | 2 . 6 | . . 3 |
+-------+-------+-------+

One day into the "project", what have I learnt so far?

Output is easy - Input is where the challenge lies.

Now, doesn't that remind us of any kind of social interaction ?

Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

I think this is the 11/14 Diabolical that Marty posted above. Probably not the right forum to ask for help, but there isn't another thread, so.....

I feel like the 45s should be telling....or that the puzzle should be able to be reduced to a Bug+1, but I'm having a brain cramp....

Anyone???

Thanks,

Kathy

This is a beautiful example of what I call an XY-Wing Chain and others call an Extended XY-Wing. The three 45 cells in boxes 4 and 5 can act as a single pivot cell for an XY-Wing. The start and end of that three-cell chain see a 48 and 58 cell which act as pincers to take out the 8 from r3c4.
