It’s been 9 days since the last Very Hard puzzle. The discussions and number of views for the Daily Puzzle Forum clearly show a popular interest in the VHs. And we can always find the easier ones in our daily papers. Nine days is far too long to wait for my hardline Sudoku fix !! |

Perhaps too hard. I like ones about this level. |

A straightforward one: a single XY (179) finishes it off.

Wapati, I worked for over an hour on this, especially looking for swordfish, sashami steps and finned steps. I only found one swordfish and suspect that I missed the critical step.
It took me eight steps to complete as follows: Quote: | UR 26 with strong link on <2>,
x-wing 1,
xyz 159
finned x-wing 6 which did not make any deletions in the box containing the fin, but by transporting the fin it provided a deletion also made by the x-wing; I treat the fin like a Kraken x-wing,
swordfish 6 opened by the prior move,
xy-wing 139,
w-wing 39,
xy-wing 569

Good job, busy puzzle.
The sword I know of is on 6s, if you saw it earlier it could be finned. |

Another fun puzzle.
I find one sword, sash/finned, perhaps. |

this might be a long path, but its the order in which I found them.
ER 1 remvoes 1 from r2c1
coloring on 1 removes 1 from r2c9
coloring on 6 removes 6 from r2c9
w-wing {1,4} removes 4 from r4c2
xyz-wing removes 4 from r1c2
(4)r7c8 = (4-5)r7c1 = (5-1)r8c1 = (1)r8c9; r8c9 <> 4
coloring on 1's removes 1 from r3c2
(4=6)r3c2 - (6)r4c2 = (6)r6c1 - (6=4)r6c7 - (4=1)r6c6 - (1)r5c5 = (1-6)r2c5 = (6)r2c1; r2c1 <> 6 |

If my second step is valid, then I used seven steps to complete the second puzzle posted by Wapati:
skyscraper <1> in r68c1; transport <1> r6c6 => r5c5 =>r2c5; delete r2c9,
A Kraken swordfish on <1> in r139c238 with fin at r5c3. The swordfish makes deletions at r1c6 & r3c9. Transport the fin r5c3 => r5c5 => r2c5; r1c6<>1.
finned x-wing <1>at r19c28 deletes r3c2,
xy-wing <146> with pivot <16> at r6c1,
xy-wing <146> with pivot <16> at r6c1 but different pincers deletes <4> r2c6,
then transport <4> r6c6 => r6c7 => r4c9; delete r2c9,
then transport r6c6 => r6c7 => r9c7 and transport <4> r2c1 => r3c2 => r9c2; delete <4> r9c58,
coloring <4> deletes r1c4,
xy-wing <456> with pivot <56> at r2c9 and pseudo-cell <45> at r2c56, transport <4> r2c5 => r5c5 => r6c6; deletes r6c7 to finish the puzzle,
NOW BREATH!
I hope my Kraken swordfish is valid. It is the very first one I have ever found, and was looking for swordfish specifically because I know Wapati likes them.
