I was hopelessly stuck after nothing more than a worthless Hidden UR. Shame on me, two dozen lashes with a wet noodle, I missed that subset, after which no more than basics finished it off. So it was a "zero-stepper."
Is that what was so rare for Danny? |

Marty,
I am not sure of the terminology, but a 5-candidate naked set plus a complementary 4-candidate hidden set seems pretty rare to me!

Keith,
They don't seem that rare to me. Of course, I ignore hidden sets because they're impossible for me to spot, and why bother when there's an easier-to-spot naked set? I haven't kept counts, but I've seen a number of quints, my terminology for a 5-candidate subset. |

Hello Marty,
Yes, I consider a Hidden Quad to be rare. Mike Barker posted (elsewhere) the statistical frequency of various techniques from a lare sample set of puzzles. If I recall correctly, the Hidden Quad had a low frequency in his results.
Regards, Danny |
