I haven't posted an "Other Puzzle" before - but this comes from a Canadian newspaper that never goes beyond the "Hard" level. So I assumed this one was in keeping with tradition - and yet I am stuck trying to solve it by basics alone.

I just did this with pencil & paper, no advanced moves required.
Maybe the key is to place 5, 6 and then 9 in R1?

Nope,
I used Nataraj' tool to put it in draw / play so that I could print it.
