I have many BBDB puzzles, but only a few other puzzles with short steps that don't require a W-Wing or gM-Wing. This is one of the other puzzles. I'll generate more soon.

Code:
 +-----------------------+
 | 8 . . | . . . | . . 6 |
 | . . . | . 7 4 | 1 . 8 |
 | . . 1 | . . . | . . . |
 |-------+-------+-------|
 | . . . | 2 . 1 | . 4 9 |
 | . 9 . | . 4 . | . . . |
 | . 1 . | 6 . 9 | . . 2 |
 |-------+-------+-------|
 | . 5 . | . . . | 6 . . |
 | . . . | 4 . . | . 1 3 |
 | 9 3 . | 7 . 6 | . 2 4 |
 +-----------------------+

I am confused using a w-wing results in a one stepper:
Quote:
w-wing 39

otherwise the best I see is a long xy-chain:
Quote:
(3=5)r1c6-(5=8)r8c6-(8=2)r3c6-(2=4)r3c7-(4=7)r3c2-(7=9)r3c8-(9=3)r2c8
=> r1c8,r2c4<>3

What am I missing?

I hope it wasn't a misunderstanding about my opening comment. I have several VH+ puzzles that need many steps (BBDB), but only a few VH+ puzzles that need a few steps. On the other hand, I have several harder puzzles that only need a few steps, but they require a W-Wing and/or gM-Wing.

Here's the VH+ solution my solver found for this puzzle.

Code:
   c8b3  Locked Triple                   <> 379  r13c7   -or-
   c7b6  Locked Triple                   <> 378  r13c7
 r8  b7  Locked Triple                   <> 267  r8c56   -or-
 r7  b8  Locked Triple                   <> 239  r8c56
   c5    Naked  Triple                   <> 358  r17c5
 r2  b1  Locked Candidate 2              <> 2    r1c23,r3c12
   c5b5  Locked Candidate 2              <> 3    r5c4
   c2b1  Locked Pair                     <> 47   r1c3,r3c1,r8c2
     b2  Naked  Triple                   <> 289  r1c6,r2c4

 r1c4    2-String Kite                   <> 5    r5c3

 <58+3>  XY-Wing  r5c4/r4c5+r5c7         <> 3    r4c7

 r28c23  <26> UR Type 1                  <> 26   r2c3

   c3b1  Locked Pair                     <> 59   r2c1,r4c3

         BUG+1                           =  9    r1c8
