Same numbers as Dan (28), but in the form of a W-Wing. |

Dan & Marty, I used an x-wing/UR on 2 and 8, but I must be missing something because it doesn't solve the puzzle. Can you help? |

I'd like more information on this magical UR <28> !!!!
Marty: Congratulations on what I'd call a difficult W-Wing to find. Even HoDoKu missed it. |

Dan, yes, that's what my grid looked like after basics. Then I eliminated the 2 from Rows 1 and 2, Column 7 using an X-wing. After that I'm stuck. It's gotta be something with all those 28 pairs. |

I used two moves to complete this one. Both were interesting, unusual moves for me.
A Remote Pair 28 from r8c3 to r6c3 to r6c7 and ending at r5c8 does not provide any deletions, but an extension on 8 has benefit.
(8)r8c3 - r9c1 = r9c78 - r7c9 = (8)r1c9; r23c8<>8,
Next I found a conflicting chain while looking for an extend xy-wing.
(8)r9c8 - (8=2)r7c9 - r7c12 = r8c3 - r6c3 = r6c7 - (2=8)r5c8; r9c8<>8

There is an x-wing 2 and a w-wing 28 that remove the 8 in r9c8.
This opens a skyscraper 8 that solves the puzzle.
Hope this
1. Doesn't have a dumb mistake
2. Helps you out

I'm not seeing that one.
I don't know if my grid was the same as the one you posted, but the 28 W-Wing in boxes 79, connected by the 8s in r9, eliminated 2s in both boxes and was a one-stepper for me. |

Hello Wendy,
Here's a list of my difficulty ratings. XY stands for XY-Chain, but one of the other advanced steps is always available in the solution to get around it. Also, members of this forum use "pincher extension" on techniques. Ask if you aren't familiar with the process.
===== ===== ===== ===== ===== Ratings are Accumulative in Techniques ===== ===== ===== =====
Code: | Basics: Naked/Hidden Single, Naked Pair/Triple, Locked Candidates 1/2
Basics+: Naked Quad, Hidden Pair/Triple/Quad
VH: BUG+1, UR Type 1, X-Wing, XY-Wing
VH+: 2-String Kite, Empty Rectangle, Remote Pair, Skyscraper,
XYZ-Wing, finned/Sashimi X-Wing, UR Type 2/4
XY: gM-Wing, W-Wing, XY-Chain, BUG+2, BUG+3, other URs
Extreme: Chain, Loop, SIN (Single Inference Network)
|
Posts (A) and (B) usually need a VH+ step. Sometimes, they only need several VH steps. Posts (C) and above probably need an XY step. BBDB means that you can expect to use several steps before the puzzle cracks.
Code: | r68 X-Wing <> 2 r12c7 extraneous
(2=8)r8c3 - r8c56 = r7c5 - (8=2)r7c9 [ W-Wing ] <> 2 r7c12,r8c7
