Added challenge: perform eliminations in only one candidate value for VH and VH+ techniques.

Code:

 +-----------------------+
 | 8 . 6 | 9 . . | . . . |
 | . . . | . . . | . . 6 |
 | 5 . 9 | 6 2 8 | 7 . 4 |
 |-------+-------+-------|
 | 1 . 2 | 7 5 . | 4 . . |
 | . . 5 | 4 6 . | . . . |
 | . . 7 | . . . | . . . |
 |-------+-------+-------|
 | . . 1 | 2 . . | . . 9 |
 | . . . | . . . | . 8 5 |
 | . 2 8 | . . . | 3 4 . |

My first attempt to complete this challenge was not successful. I made four moves eliminating 3s, but it was not possible to complete the puzzle with another deletion of a 3. In any case, I found it a very interesting, fun puzzle and will try again. My first solution had two interesting moves that I assume are VH+, as follows.

x-wing 3 in r28c34 deletes 3 in r2c25|r8c56,

sashimi swordfish 3 in r345c268 deleted 3 in r6c2,

Kraken x-wing 3 in r57c16 and fin in r5c8.
If x-wing is true then 3 is deleted from r6c1|r146c6,
If fin is true: (3)r5c8 - (3)r13c8 = (3)r1c9; r1c6 <>3,
If fin is true: (3)r5c8 - (3)r13c8 = (3)r1c9 - (3)r1c5 = (3)r6c5; r6c1|r46c6<>3. Thus all four deletions are made by the x-wing and the fin and can be removed.

x-wing 3 in r34c28 deletes 3 in r1c28|r5c8,

At this point, no further deletions of 3 are possible. A xy-wing 1-23 with vertex 13 in r3c8 completed the puzzle.

Well, I make another pass at meeting this challenge with digit 3 and found a more normal sequence of steps but it resulted in the same final condition as my first attempt.

So I gave up on digit 3 and tried another digit which also failed after several encouraging moves. I am obviously missing the key to open up this puzzle.

The puzzle is "tricky" but not unreasonable in the steps needed. There is only one VH+ step needed.

Ted: When an XY-Wing performs an elimination in a bivalue cell, then the XY-Wing can be "slid around" to perform a complementary elimination in one of the original pincer cells.

Code:
Basics:  Naked/Hidden Single, Naked Pair/Triple, Locked Candidates 1/2
Basics+: Naked Quad, Hidden Pair/Triple/Quad
VH:      BUG+1, UR Type 1, X-Wing, XY-Wing
VH+:     2-String Kite, Empty Rectangle, Remote Pair, Skyscraper,
         XYZ-Wing, finned X-Wing, UR Type 2/4
XY:      gM-Wing, W-Wing, XY-Chain, BUG+2, BUG+3, other URs
Extreme: Chain, Loop, SIN (Single Inference Network)

As usual, I just play the moves I see.

XYZ (369), maybe a non-factor
X (3)
Kite (3)
Hidden UR (15), a non-factor
XYZ (123)
Simple coloring (3)

I consider it "tricky" when an X-Wing for a candidate value immediately exposes a second X-Wing for that candidate value. I'm "completely unprepared" to later encounter a third X-Wing for that candidate value. An asterisk (*) marks the VH and VH+ steps for candidate <3>.

Code:
     b7  Naked  Pair                     <> 34   r8c12

   c2b1  Locked Candidate 1              <> 7    r8c2

   c34   X-Wing                        * <> 3    r2c25,r8c56

   c59   X-Wing                        * <> 3    r1c268,r6c1268

 r7  b4  turbot fish/ER                * <> 3    r4c6

 r6      Naked  Triple                   <> 123  r6c78

 r5  b6  Locked Candidate 1              <> 1    r5c6

   r34   X-Wing                        * <> 3    r5c8

 <13+2>  XY-Wing  r3c8/r1c9+r5c8         <> 2    r1c8,r6c9    what Ted found
 <12+3>  XY-Wing  r5c8/r3c8+r6c9       * <> 3    r1c9,r4c8    also cracks puzzle
 *-----------------------------------------------------------*
 | 8     147   6     | 9     1347  147   | 15    125   2-3   |
 | 2     147   34    | 13    147   5     | 8     9     6     |
 | 5     13    9     | 6     2     8     | 7    P13    4     |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 1     36    2     | 7     5     9     | 4     6-3   8     |
 | 39    8     5     | 4     6     23    | 19   V12    7     |
 | 469   469   7     | 8     13    12    | 59    56   P23    |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 34    5     1     | 2     8     34    | 6     7     9     |
 | 679   69    34    | 13    1479  1467  | 2     8     5     |
 | 679   2     8     | 5     79    67    | 3     4     1     |
 *-----------------------------------------------------------*

Note: the X-Wing and XY-Wing could be replaced by an XYZ-Wing ... that eliminates a <3>.

Congratulations Dan for a solution in <3>.
