+-------+-------+-------+
| . . 9 | . . 3 | . 2 1 |
| . . 7 | . 4 . | 9 . . |
| 2 3 . | 5 . . | 7 . . |
+-------+-------+-------+
| . . . | . . 5 | . 4 3 |
| 5 . 8 | 2 3 . | . . 7 |
| . . . | . . . | 2 . . |
+-------+-------+-------+

Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

Just about to go off to work but looking at it I think there may be a contradiction which shows that r1c1 <>9.

If right that might solve it but until I have sat down with it properly I won't know
.

Not a one stepper:

Quote:
(7=9)r1c1-(9=8)r1c9-(8=9)r9c9-(9=6)r8c7-(6=8)r6c8-(8=9)r6c6-(9=7)r36-(r1c35)=(7)r1c1

Proves r1c1 <> 9 but another step required.

This started off as an unimpressive network solution from my solver. However, I get the credit for turning it into a work of art. Laughing

Kraken Skyscraper: Either r9c6=8 or Skyscraper c68r6 in <8>

Code:
 (8-1)r9c6 = r8c6 - r8c7 = (1-8)r7c7 = r9c9 - (8)r1c9

 Skyscraper => r1c9<>8

 +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
 |  79     2      6      |  4789   5     *4789   |  3      1      9-8    |
 |  3      79     4      |  789    1      6      |  5     *789    2      |
 |  1      8      5      |  3      2      79     |  4      79     6      |
 |-----------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------|
 |  4      5      9      |  678    678    3      |  68     2      1      |
 |  8      6      7      |  1      4      2      |  9      3      5      |
 |  2      3      1      |  5      689   *89     |  7     *68     4      |
 |-----------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------|
 |  679    179    2      |  6789   6789   5      |  18     4      3      |
 |  5      149    8      |  2      3      149    |  16     69     7      |
 |  679    1479   3      |  46789  6789  #14789  |  2      5      89     |
 +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
 # 58 eliminations remain

Yes, this is one of those abominations where two steps are turned into one!

There has been so much rewording of definitions, that I don't take a position anymore on differentiating them. To me the pattern is Kraken because my introduction to the term was for a fish pattern with an external fin cell that didn't play back through the patttern (like a remote fin cell). If it's not a fish pattern, then I'll probably use "almost".

Regards, Danny

My VH+ two step solution .

Quote:
ANP(79)r2c28 = (8)r2c8 - (8=9)r1c9 - r1c1 = (9)r2c2; r2c4<>9, which sets up a

Swordfish on 9 in 238c268; r79c2,r169c6<>9

Call them what you will, Kraken, finned, almost, etc., I am finding these patterns fun to find and work with plus they can be very effective.

I am (currently) referring to them all as "almost".
