Ted, I agree, that can play a big role, but I'm also under the assumption that some folks have a goal of minimizing the number of moves, not that there's anything wrong with that. There does seem to be a certain amount of pride in announcing one's solution as a "one-stepper", "two-stepper', or whatever.
On the other hand, I've been psychoanalyzing people based on forum posts for years (not just this forum), although I'm totally unqualified to do that.  |

Marty, you definitely selected the right move - you caught an extra fish (ahem wing - oh well, fish and fowl) ...
Since I usually solve Sudokus on paper, there is never the option for me to shoot for the lowest number of moves. I take them as I see them, sometimes more, sometimes less.
(OMG, am I about to be psychanalysed now? )

Marty,
I rarely skip a move I find unless it is readily apparent that any deletions will be useless such as the case when you will still be left with many occurrences in all three houses (unless the deletion creates a bivalue). Other times I may skip a move just because I am looking for a specific pattern.
On occasions, I have deleted a move prior to posting when it is obvious the move was not needed to solve the puzzle.

I am going to save Marty some effort and do the analysis of myself for him.
I use programs like susser, xsudo and sudocue for time saving tricks like skipping through basics, copying and pasting grids with candidates already highlighted and so forth.
since I started posting solutions, it made no sense to try and do this all by hand. it seems much more time saving to use these tools to speed up the posting process. it makes the solving and posting process a little more enjoyable for me.
I think finding a one stepper solution is a matter of personal interest. using these tools makes it very easy to go back and reanalyze the grid for such steps. I like the challenge as I am sure others do as well.
above and beyond the goal of getting to a solution, no matter how one gets there, is the importance of understand the logic in getting there. a one stepper is nice to see in some harder than average puzzles, but if no one understands the logic in getting there, then what purpose did it serve?
the bigger goal in such solutions is to raise the level of understanding of the observers of the forum.
imo, this reason alone has been my biggest stimulus for posting solutions that I have found and hopefully encourages others to try and understand. |
