A skyscraper(5) c1, c4 is an alternative first step that ends with the same w-wing(39) to finish...
[Edit] ... for the Telegraph puzzle (I did this one in the newspaper on the tube! It was messy!)

I overlooked the skyscraper 5 on my first pass and it was a big hammer. A xy-wing 23-9 with pseudocell b3q73 completed the puzzle.
