Some of you may be aware that a Menneske request for a "super hard" often results in a "very hard" that is quite difficult. Here is one such:
Code:
Puzzle: M348400sh(0)
+-------+-------+-------+
| 1 . 8 | 7 . . | 3 . 2 |
| . . . | . 3 9 | . . . |
| . . 6 | . 8 . | 7 . . |
+-------+-------+-------+
| . 7 . | 9 . . | . . 5 |
| . 1 5 | . . . | 4 6 . |
| 8 . . | . . 4 | . 7 . |
+-------+-------+-------+
| . . 3 | . 4 . | 5 . . |
| . . . | 6 9 . | . . . |
| 5 . 9 | . . 7 | 6 . 4 |
+-------+-------+-------+

I'm not familiar with Menneske's VHs, so I don't know what to expect. Are the VHs you get from clicking SH the same level of difficulty as if you clicked VH?

I believe so. The Menneske difficulty seems to be based on some heuristic, not on solving the puzzle. To me, this unpredictability is part of the charm.

Here is a "VH" which seems quite difficult:
Code:
Puzzle: M136122vh
+-------+-------+-------+

| . 2 . | . 9 . | . . . |

Marty,

To be clear:

You can choose a VH puzzle at Menneske.

You can also choose a SH, which often results in a VH.

I do not know if either of these results in puzzles that are indeed of different levels of difficulty.

I can imagine, but I do not know.

Keith.

Unless I made a mistake it seemed barely VH - a single turbot move solves it
Code:
kite(2) c4, r9 with transport -(2)r5c9=r1c9 ; r12c8<>2

[Edit] Sorry! I now see that Keith posted two puzzles and I just cut and paste thinking the grids were the same. This is a solution for the second one.

Keith,

Two puzzles in one thread can get confusing. Smile

Type 1 UR (13); r7c9=7
Coloring (1); r3c4<>1

For the first puzzle this xy-chain does the job...
Code:
xy-chain ; (9=2)r7c8 - (2=6)r8c2 - (6=3)r6c2 - (3=1)r6c9 - (1=9)r3c9 ; r13c8<>9, r7c9<>9

Several ADP patterns were present; here is one that is a single-stepper..........

AUR(38)r458c689; r2c8=8
SIS 3: r56c6 use b5=>empty; r48c8 use c8=>empty; r5c9 use r5=>empty; r8c9 use b9=>empty
SIS 8: r56c6 use b5=>r5c4=8; r48c8 use c8=>r2c8=8; r58c9 use c9=>empty
(8)r2c8;
||
(8)r5c4-(8=3)r5c9-(3=1)r6c9-r4c7=(1-8)r2c7=(8)r2c8;
