What, no takers?

After basics:

I managed to solve it with the usual toolkit of wings and kites, but it did take six steps.

I'm encountering a lot of difficult puzzles lately and this was no exception. I played an X-Wing, W-Wing and two Skyscrapers before getting stuck. At that point I turned to Medusa and a wrap reduced the grid to a BUG+1.

Marty,

This one is kind of driving me nuts. I can't retrace all my steps - I was trying to find the essential ones. It came down to solving R9C1 as 6 and eliminating 4 in R4C1. Here goes another try:

After basics there is an X-wing 9 in C28 and an XYZ-wing 1-36 in R1B3. Then, skyscrapers eliminate 3 in R6C8 and R8C5. Leaving us here:
Code:
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 7    8    19   | 2    3    59   | 1569 4    16   |
| 34   6    149  | 59   78   78   | 1359 2    13   |
| 2    39   5    | 6    4    1    | 8    39   7    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 468  2    4689 | 1    5    34   | 369  7    368  |
| 1    59   3    | 7    68   68   | 2    59   4    |
| 4568 7    468  | 34   9    2    | 136  56   1368 |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 9    1    7    | 8    2    36   | 4    36   5    |
| 3568 35   68   | 49   67   49   | 367  1    2    |
| 36   4    2    | 35   1    3567 | 367  8    9    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+

The skyscraper in C28 takes out 3 in R8C7 (solving R9C1) and we are here:
Code:
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 7    8    19   | 2    3    59   | 1569 4    16   |
| 34@  6    149  | 59   78   78   | 1359 2    13   |
| 2    39#  5    | 6    4    1    | 8    39#  7    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
|-48   2    469  | 1    5    34@  | 369  7    368  |
| 1    59   3    | 7    68   68   | 2    59   4    |
| 458  7    46   | 34   9    2    | 136  56   1368 |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 9    1    7    | 8    2    36#  | 4    36#  5    |
| 35   35   8    | 49   67   49   | 67   1    2    |
| 6    4    2    | 35   1    357  | 37   8    9    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+

The strong links # in R37 excite the W-wing pincers @, solving R4C1 as 8. There results a BUG+1, or your choice of a couple of -6 XY-wings to finish it off.

That first X-wing is crucial.

I suppose that is seven steps.

I don't know what my intermediate grid looked like, but if it resembled yours, I'd miss that W-Wing most of the time.

Marty,

Me, too!

In this case I went on a big hunt for kites, W-wings and M-wings involving all those bi-value cells that include 3.

Seemed like a never-ending barage of turbot moves on 3...
I count six moves but sounds the same as Keith.
Code:
x-wing(9)  c2, c8 ; r3c4<>9
skyscraper(3) c2, c5 ; r3c4<>9
er(3) r7, b5 ; r6c8<>3
skyscraper(3) c2, c8 ; r8c7<>8
m-wing-like(36) ; (3=4)r6c4-(4=6)r6c3 - r6c8=(6-3)r7c8=r7c6 ; r9c4<>3, r4c6<>3
BUG+1 ; r4c7=6

This puzzle didn't seem to offer much lee-way. Six moves and an extraneous XYZ-Wing.
