Type 4 UR 78 setting r13c2<>8 reveals an
XYZ-Wing 248 with apex in r1c3; r1c2<>4 solves it.

I also didn't find a solution using just the standard VH moves. I played an XYZ wing (478), X-Wing (7), followed by a Type 1 UR on 78.

roaa,Marty,
I am still at a loss. The xyz-wing 478 with apex in r1c2 (if it is the one you are refering to) sets r1c3<>8 leading to the Type 1 UR 78. I do not see how other eliminations ca be made wihout using it. Can you show the Grid after the basic moves so that I can easily follow?

Clement, this is my post-basics grid. I first played with pencil and paper, but I successfully completed the puzzle online just with the XYZ-Wing.

Code:

+--------------+----------------+---------+
| 9   478 248  | 6    247  3    | 78 1 5  |
| 6   1   48   | 4578 457  458  | 9  2 3  |
| 357 578 238  | 9    1    28   | 78 6 4  |
+--------------+----------------+---------+
| 47  3   6    | 1    457  45   | 2  9 8  |
| 1   9   5    | 2    8    6    | 3  4 7  |
| 8   2   47   | 47   3    9    | 16 5 16 |
+--------------+----------------+---------+
| 2   458 1489 | 458  4569 7    | 45 3 16 |
| 345 458 1348 | 458  2456 2458 | 16 7 9  |
| 457 6   479  | 3    459  1    | 45 8 2  |

I'm getting to this a little late today, and used 2 x-wings, the last eliminating the 7 at R1C5, which set up the 248 xyz.

+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 2    458  1489 | 458  4569 7    | 1456 3    16   |
| 345  458  1348 | 458  2456 2458 | 1456 7    9    |
| 457  6    479  | 3    459  1    | 45   8    2    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
There are two XYZ-wings in R1B1: 47-8 and 2-48.

They do essentially the same thing. Each is a one-stepper.
