Surprised no posts. This one was one of the most complicated VHs I've come across! |

I found 3 xy-wings to start(2 of them are needed).
After this an x-wing and an xyz-wing eliminating 2 candidates from R2C6 leads to a triple in row 2 and further solves with basics. |

Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site
There are two XY wings I can see here
245 which removes the 5 in r1c8 and
124 which removes the 1 in r3c7
also the 3 cells that make up the second XY form a chain which gives -1 r7c7
so this leads to -1 r7c78 and solves the puzzle |

One way of viewing this double elimination of 1's is to look at the <15> at r7c3. This is the anchor or jumping off point.
If it is 1 we have the double elimination of 1’s in r7c78 as mentioned by Tom above. But what if it’s 5 ?
Think of it like a river that splits into two tributaries.
One tributary puts a 1 in r5c7 so that r7c7 <> 1
Second tributary puts a 1 in r1c8 so that r7c8 <>1
Whether r7c3 is 1 or 5 the 1's in r7c78 are toast.
You would still need the 245 XY wing removing 5 in r1c8 afterwards to solve the puzzle. |
