The DB puzzles seem to be no more. Today's puzzle in the Free Press was trivial. Yesterday's, though, was kind of interesting:
Code:
Puzzle: FP100507
+-------+-------+-------+
| . . . | . . . | . . . |
| 5 . . | . 1 . | 8 . 9 |
| 7 . . | 3 . 9 | . . 1 |
+-------+-------+-------+
| 1 . 2 | . . 8 | 4 . . |
| 9 . . | 4 . 1 | . . 7 |
| . . 7 | 9 . . | 2 . 5 |
+-------+-------+-------+
| 2 . . | 5 . 7 | . . 6 |
| 3 . 5 | . 9 . | . . 4 |
| . . . | . . . | . . . |
+-------+-------+-------+

The basics run out here

Code:

 *-----------------------------------------------------------*
 | 468   19    19    | 68    7     5     | 3     46    2     |
 | 5     3     46    | 26    1     24    | 8     7     9     |
 | 7     2     468   | 3     48    9     | 5     46    1     |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 1     6     2     | 7     5     8     | 4     9     3     |
 | 9     5     3     | 4     2     1     | 6     8     7     |
 | 48    48    7     | 9     6     3     | 2     1     5     |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 2     1489  1489  | 5     48    7     | 19    3     6     |
 | 3     178   5     | 18    9     6     | 17    2     4     |
 | 46    1479  1469  | 12    3     24    | 179   5     8     |
 *-----------------------------------------------------------*

at which point I used an XY-wing and a W-wing to finish it off.

Interesting indeed - there are actually 2 overlapping xy-wings:
one with pivot r3c5 the other with pivot r1c4 in a configuration like this:
Code:

 68  .  .  .  46
   \           |
    48  .  .  46

so that 4 and 6 get removed at the same time.

On a similar note, at the point where the w-wing is needed, there are actually quite a few xy chains, but also two w-wings that are even connected:

{4,8} in r3c3 connects to {4,8} in r7c5, which in turn connects to {4,8} in r6c2:

'48'(33)='86'(11)='64'(91)='42'(96)='24'(26)='48'(35)='84'(75)
'48'(62)='84'(61)='46'(91)='68'(11)='84'(33)='48'(35)='84'(75)

Two W-Wings, both on 46, did it for me.

This puzzle seems to be widely syndicated. It is carried, for instance, in the "LA Times" and several local papers. The Friday puzzles are the only difficult ones and are often interesting. I have posted one or two of them in the past.
