I am stuck. The hint took me to bottom right square putting a 1 in first column, middle row. Why? I can't figure out the logic. |

Hi, welcome to the forum. I can't speak for others, but I don't think I could start to see if I could help without knowing how far you had gotten.
There are two good ways to post a properly aligned grid.
If you are doing a puzzle (regardless of puzzle source) online on this site, all you have to do is click the "Ascii" button to the right of the grid. Then follow the instructions in the pop-up window to copy and paste the grid into the message box.
Otherwise, type the grid into Notepad, which uses a fixed xx font, or into a word processing program, and choose a font that uses a fixed xx, such as Courier New. Proofread the grid before posting. Select (highlight) the grid and copy it (Ctrl+C). In the forum message box, click "Code", then paste (Ctrl+V) the grid to the right of the Code tag. Click "Code" again which inserts the tag at the end of the grid.
A properly aligned grid makes it easier for people to analyze your position and may well get you a quicker response.
This is an example of a grid which was first typed into Notepad. It takes less time than it looks like, as once you establish the maximum number of spaces per cell, you get into a rhythm and it takes less than five minutes.
Code: | -------------------------------------------------------------------
|23569 2369 1 |259 8 7 |2356 356 4 |
|23569 23689 2359 |1 24 49 |235678 35678 2358 |

The next hint is a 1 in column 7 and row 8. This is where I am stuck. I don't know the logic in eliminating the 9. I neatened up the rows does that help? Or did I screw it up more?

I see you figured it out on the second try. I can't help because I have to leave the house, but someone else will surely be along with an answer. |

You missed some "locked candidates."
In row 7, the 6s are restricted to box 7, so get rid of the 6 in r9c1.
In box 5, the 2s are restricted to col 5, so get rid of the 2 in box 2 in col 5.
In col 4, the 1s are restricted to box 8, so delete the other 1s in that box. This is key because you now have a 79 pair in row 8 which can get you started solving some cells.
Also in row 2 there are a few eliminations which can be made because of the 39 pair.
Good luck, not sure how far this stuff will take you. |

The restricted 1s in box 5 was what did it for me. Thank you so much. I think I was staring at it soooooo long that I missed it. I'll see how far I get now. thanks so much.
What I found that I don't like with the Sweep mode is that the computer does not eliminate the candidates that should be eliminated like with the pairs of 39 in row 2.
Again, thanks Marty |

Yes, you just have to study the grid closely and yourself eliminate the candidates that shopuldn't be there. |

That's intentional! If it removed candidates that can be eliminated by all types of logic then you'd have a solved puzzle. Surely you want to do this yourself

Thanks, Sam for the heads up. I thought I was doing something wrong and was going to stop doing the eliminations.
We love your site! and appreciate all the work you have done!
