The book is “Mensa Absolutely Nasty Sudoku, Level 3”, by Frank Longo. This is an “Official Mensa Puzzle Book.”
The introduction states that the vast majority of puzzles in various media labeled “hard”, “expert”, “challenger” and the like are really not very difficult, and in some cases, downright easy. But not this series. Level 1 requires basic and intermediate techniques, but are not beginner puzzles. In Level 2 and Level 3, more advanced techniques are added to the mix and Level 4 will require multiple advanced techniques in each puzzle.
I did the first four puzzles and none required more than two techniques, nothing more difficult than X, XY, XYZ or BUG+1. “Absolutely Nasty”? I don’t think so.
This one’s going back to Barnes and Noble. I haven’t yet decided whether to just return it or exchange it for Level 4. |
