Code:
. . .|. . 1|9 . 4
. . .|. . .|7 . 6
9 . .|. 4 6|. 1 2
-----+-----+-----
. 5 3|. 8 .|. . .
1 . .|. . .|. . 9
. . .|. 7 .|8 5 .
-----+-----+-----
3 8 .|9 . .|. . 7
5 . 1|. . .|. . .
7 . 9|6 . .|. . .

VH methods solve it in two. the ambitious chain searchers will solve it in one.

on the same note, I'd also like to include today's one trick pony as a similar type.
Code:
. . 1|. . 8|. . .
. 3 8|. . .|9 . .
. . .|3 2 .|. . 5
-----+-----+-----
. 7 .|6 . .|. . .
6 . 5|. . .|2 . 9
. . .|. . 5|. 4 .
-----+-----+-----
2 . .|. 6 4|. . .
. . 3|. . .|1 8 .
. . .|7 . .|4 . .

in this case the usual (x,xy,xyz) - wing moves or even the ambitious xy-chain doesn't do what a simple coloring move will. I will have to see how many w-wings or m-wings solve it.

As suggested, I solved the first puzzle in two moves:
Quote:
xy <345> and a BUG+1.
I still need to try the second puzzle

Two moves for me also:

On the second puzzle, digit <1> was the killer. I required two moves to do the deed:
Quote:
A kite in box 4 with the pincer at r7c2 transported to r6c4 via r7c4 and the pincer at r4c9 transported to r5c2 via r4c1 to delete <1> at r5c56. Then coloring on <1> eliminates eight <1s> to complete the puzzle.

yes, a single digit coloring move will finish it.

Yes, a simple 5-cell basic coloring is all that is needed.

However, there is a more complicated, but interesting, single step solution:
Code:
+-----------+----------------+----------------+
| 5   2   1 | 9  [47]   8    |[67]  3   [46]  |
| 7   3   8 | 5  [14]   6    | 9    2   [14]  |
| 9   4   6 | 3   2    [17]  | 8   [17]  5    |
+-----------+----------------+----------------+
| 18  7   4 | 6   9     2    | 3    5    18   |
| 6   18  5 | 4   1378 [17]3 | 2   [17]  9    |
| 3   9   2 | 18 [17]8  5    |[67]  4   [16]8 |
+-----------+----------------+----------------+
| 2   18  7 | 18  6     4    | 5    9    3    |
| 4   6   3 | 2   5     9    | 1    8    7    |
| 18  5   9 | 7   138   13   | 4    6    2    |
+-----------+----------------+----------------+

The digits shown in brackets form a DP. This in turn creates the {38} pseudo-cell (3)r5c6=(8)r6c59.

That pseudo-cell forms a 138 "XY Wing":
(8=1)r7c4 - (1=3)r9c6 - (3)r5c6=(8)r6c59

This eliminates <8> from r6c4.

It might seem weird, but this was the one-step solution I noticed first.

Not as involved as Asellus' solution, but slightly more complex than a single-digit solution.

Code:
 Remote Pair (18)
 +--------------------------------------------------------------+
 |  5     2     1     |  9     47    8     |  67    3     46    |
 |  7     3     8     |  5     14    6     |  9     2     14    |
 |  9     4     6     |  3     2     17    |  8     17    5     |
 |--------------------+--------------------+--------------------|
 |  18    7     4     |  6     9     2     |  3     5     18    |
 |  6    *18    5     |  4     37-18 137   |  2     17    9     |
 |  3     9     2     | *18    178   5     |  67    4     168   |

 |  18    5     9     |  7     138   13    |  4     6     2     |
 +--------------------------------------------------------------+

Code:
 W-Wing (18) [r6c4]+(8)r5+[r7c2]  =>  [r7c4]<>1
 +--------------------------------------------------------------+
 |  5     2     1     |  9     47    8     |  67    3     46    |

want another one step puzzle?

this is a puzzle posted by GSF (#116) in patterns game #047. I like what Ravel does sometimes in providing some interesting puzzles from those games so I had a peak at some VH+ puzzles around a 7.0 rating. However, this puzzle does succomb to a move which should be considered less than 7.0 IMO.

Code:
. . 1|. . 2|. . 3
. 4 .|. . .|. 5 .
6 . .|. 7 .|8 . .
-----+-----+-----
. . .|1 . 6|. . 9
. . 9|. . .|6 . .
3 . .|9 . 7|. . .
-----+-----+-----
. . 5|. 1 .|. . 4
. 2 .|. . .|. 9 .
4 . .|8 . .|3 . .

Code:
.------------------------.------------------------.------------------------.
| 5789    5789    1      | 456     45689   2      | 479     467     3      |
