I had to use a UR (45), type 4 (?) with <69> as a virtual cell. Then an xy-chain with <9> pinchers. Anything more direct?

Earl,
I had a Type 3 UR that cleans up C9, exposing a W-wing. After basics:
Code: | +----------------------+----------------------+----------------------+
| 389 3789 39 | 2 4 6 | 37 5 1 |
| 2 37 5 | 1 8 9 | 4 67 36 |
| 1 46 46 | 5 7 3 | 2 89 89 |
+----------------------+----------------------+----------------------+
| 69 1 8 | 7 2 45 | 56 3 4569 |
| 5 349 349 | 6 39 8 | 1 2 7 |
| 369 2 7 | 39 1 45 | 8 469 4569 |
+----------------------+----------------------+----------------------+
| 389 5 139 | 4 6 2 | 37 178 38 |
| 4 368 1236 | 389 359 7 | 56 168 23568 |
| 7 368 236 | 38 35 1 | 9 468 234568 |
+----------------------+----------------------+----------------------+ |

I used a W-wing (39) to set up a finned-x-wing on 3s which allowed the W-wing on 89 that solves it. |

Two steps, both making deletions of digit <3>. First a w-wing <39> with strong link <9> in col <2> plus one addition deletion via a pincer extension, and multi-coloring on <3>.

wapati,
Thank you! A fin of two cells!
By the way, the UR is on <45>. The pseudo-cell <69> makes a quad in C9 with <36>, <89>, <38>. You can eliminate <368> in R89C9.

Keith, I also found this Type 3 UR, but did not (and still do not) find that it exposed a w-wing.
Where was the w-wing exposed by the UR?

Cleanup after the UR exposes an 89 in r7c1.

Wapati beat me to it!
After the UR, the <3> in R7 lies in B9, leaving <89> in R7C1.
Taking out <8> in R7C9.

I was just to closed-minded. I was looking at the <89> in r3c8 and the exposed <89> at r7c1 with a strong link <8> in col <9>. This w-wing does not provide any deletions, whereas your w-wing deletes <8> from r7c9 and solves the puzzle.
Thanks again.

Ted,
the other w-wing on {8,9} via strong links in row 9 on the 8's does make an elimination if you extend the 9 in r7c1 via the 9's in row 4. eliminates the 9 in r6c8. |

Cells <89> ABC.
Strong links on <8> @@ and <9> ##.
If A is <8>, B is <9>, C is <8>.
If A is <9>, C is <8>, B is <9>.
