Considerably less elegant than Dan: x-wing (8), x-wing (7), xy-wing (478) and xy-wing (678).

I disagree. A very respectable solution in my opinion. It's actually one step shorter than the one listed by my solver.
What concerns me is that a necessary step will end up being very difficult to spot and people will spend much more effort on a puzzle than I'd expected. When you and others post solutions such as yours, then I know that a puzzle met its objective.
Regards, Danny
Note: If you disable Smileys in a post, or use <8>, then your first X-Wing is easier to read. |

Maybe a de facto one-stepper. I used a W (78) and Kite (4) which seemed to be of no help, but then it solved when I stumbled across the X-Wing (8). |

Sorry about the accidental Smiley face!
This puzzle was a much-needed reminder (I speak for myself) to scout for x-wings both horizontally and vertically. I tend to do the former, and both of these were the latter. |

A two-stepper.
x-wing 8in r68c49,
xy-wing 6-78 with vertex in r6c4.
