Two alternatives.

W-Wing (46); r5c1<>4
XY-Chain; r4c9<>2

I can usually do these pretty easily however this one was a problem. With the first response, row 9, col 7 must be a 7 not a pivot. As far as the w wings from the 46's in box 7, I don't see them eliminating either the 6 in r9, c7 or the 4 in r5, c1. Perhaps I need to see where you were after the regular eliminations. Please help!

Bob,

I think this is where we all are after basics:

Code:

+------------+------------+---------+
| 259  4 7   | 39  58 239 | 89 6 1  |
| 569  3 569 | 7   58 1   | 89 2 4  |
| 29   1 8   | 6   4  29  | 5  3 7  |
+------------+------------+---------+
| 1    7 24  | 5   6  8   | 34 9 23 |
| 2349 8 249 | 139 7  39  | 46 5 26 |
| 359  6 59  | 2   39 4   | 1  7 8  |
+------------+------------+---------+
| 46   9 1   | 34  23 5   | 7  8 36 |
| 7    5 3   | 8   1  6   | 2  4 9  |
| 8    2 46  | 349 39 7   | 36 1 35 |
+------------+------------+---------+

Can you see those solutions now?

I went a little farther with basics, although I've been making errors lately.

Code:

+-----------+------------+---------+
| 259 4 7   | 39  58 239 | 89 6 1  |
| 569 3 569 | 7   58 1   | 89 2 4  |
| 29  1 8   | 6   4  29  | 5  3 7  |
+-----------+------------+---------+
| 1   7 24  | 5   6  8   | 34 9 23 |
| 349 8 249 | 1   7  39  | 46 5 26 |
| 359 6 59  | 2   39 4   | 1  7 8  |
+-----------+------------+---------+
| 46  9 1   | 34  2  5   | 7  8 36 |
| 7   5 3   | 8   1  6   | 2  4 9  |
| 8   2 46  | 349 39 7   | 36 1 5  |
+-----------+------------+---------+

Kathy,

Thanks for the reply however, I still don't see it. How did you fill in the 1, 2 & 9 in row 8 (col 5, 7 & 9). That looks like the key to me

I'm not Kathy, but if you post your grid maybe we could answer the questions. However, looking at the other 8 rows in those columns, I don't know that anything else could exist in r8c579. Have you accounted for the naked pairs and triples in those columns?

After the basics, I found a UR with 29 at R1C1, R3C1, R3C6 and 239 at R1C6. Invoking uniqueness, R1C6 must be 3, that was the crux, and the rest was easy.

How were you able to get rid of the 5 in r1c1?

There's a nice example of an s-wing(46) which solves b7 - for those interested in a more esoteric wing! (Just another viewpoint on the two w-wings already posted)
Code:
+-----------------+------------+-----------+
| 259    4  7     | 39  58 239 | 89   6 1  |
| 569    3  569   | 7   58 1   | 89   2 4  |
| 29     1  8     | 6   4  29  | 5    3 7  |
+-----------------+------------+-----------+
| 1      7  24    | 5   6  8   | 34   9 23 |
| 3(4)9  8  249   | 1   7  39  | (46) 5 26 |
| 359    6  59    | 2   39 4   | 1    7 8  |
+-----------------+------------+-----------+
| (4)-6  9  1     | 34  2  5   | 7    8 36 |
| 7      5  3     | 8   1  6   | 2    4 9  |
| 8      2  -4(6) | 349 39 7   | 3(6) 1 5  |
+-----------------+------------+-----------+
s-wing(46) ; (4)r7c1=r5c1 - (4=6)r5c7 - (6)r9c7=r9c3 ; r7c1<>6, r9c3<>4
