Here is a three stepper:-
1) W-Wing 56 with SL 5 in col 9; r8c1<>6 leads to
2) Finned X-Wing 6 in row 1&8; r7c8<>6 and
3) XYZ-Wing 356 with Apex in r2c7; r2c9<>5 solves it. |

The W-Wing on 56 was a one-stepper for me. After basics:
Code: |
+-----------+----------------+------------+
| 4 56 3 | 1 59 7 | 2 69 8 |
| 56 7 9 | 2 3458 358 | 356 1 45 |
| 8 2 1 | 6 3459 359 | 35 49 7 |
+-----------+----------------+------------+
| 7 459 2 | 349 1 359 | 8 35 6 |
| 15 159 6 | 3789 3589 3589 | 4 357 2 |
| 3 45 8 | 47 6 2 | 9 57 1 |
+-----------+----------------+------------+
| 126 136 5 | 38 238 4 | 7 68 9 |
| 26 36 7 | 389 2389 1 | 56 468 45 |
| 9 8 4 | 5 7 6 | 1 2 3 |
+-----------+----------------+------------+

A method without using any known technique---Yellow Zone Strategy
After basics:
Code: | +-----------+----------------+------------+
| 4 56Y 3 | 1 5*9^ 7 | 2 69Y 8 |
| 5^*6 7 9 | 2 3458 358 | 356 1 4^5 |
| 8 2 1 | 6 3459 359 | 35 49^ 7 |
+-----------+----------------+------------+
| 7 459 2 | 349 1 359 | 8 35 6 |
| 15 159 6 | 3789 3589 3589 | 4 357 2 |
| 3 45 8 | 47 6 2 | 9 57 1 |
+-----------+----------------+------------+
| 126 136 5 | 38 238 4 | 7 68 9 |
| 26 36 7 | 389 2389 1 | 56 468 45 |
| 9 8 4 | 5 7 6 | 1 2 3 |
+-----------+----------------+------------+ |
Set a Yellow Zone : r1c2=56, r1c8=69 (marked with Y)
Note that if r1c2<>5 and r1c8<>9 then we get a conflict!
Candidates cause r1c2<>5 marked with *.
Candidates cause r1c8<>9 marked with ^.
We see that candidate 5 in r2c1 marked with both^*. This means if r2c1=5 then we get a conflict. In other words, we must eliminate 5 from r2c1.
The puzzle can then be solved by singles. |
