Methinks when looking for swordfish is a losing proposition, looking for jellyfish ain't no better. I'm happy to solve puzzles with any non-T&E moves. Cool

Keith, in a recent thread you stated "I believe a regular (unfinned) fish always has a complement. "

What did you mean by "complement?"

I'm trying to find the complement swordfish (or any fish) to the one in this puzzle (3s, columns 157.)

Normally, I wouldn't include the Starfish, but the topic of complementary fish was also included in the discussion.

[Edit: changed Whale to Starfish.]

    (3) c157\r589

the 3 is missing 8 times,
so the complement of a Swordfish is the remaining 8-3=5 rows and columns,
i.e. a Squirmbag r12467\c23489
( which daj95376 has posted as a "Whale" )

What did you mean by "complement?"

I'm trying to find the complement swordfish (or any fish) to the one in this puzzle (3s, columns 157.)

By complement I mean: If there is a fish in the rows (columns), there is another complementary fish in the columns (rows) that makes the same eliminations.

In this case, there is a swordfish on 3 in C157. There is also a squirmbag on 3 in R12467 that makes the same eliminations.

After the 3-fish,
Code:
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 567  3579 369  | 268  4    1    | 79   68   23   |
| 1    8    36   | 267  9    67   | 5    4    23   |
| 2    79   4    | 5    68   3    | 79   168  168  |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 57   3579 2389 | 38   1    58   | 6    238  4    |
| 4    1    68   | 9    368  2    | 38   5    7    |
| 56   35   2368 | 3468 7    4568 | 1    238  9    |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+
| 9    6    1    | 378  2    78   | 4    378  5    |
| 38   2    7    | 146  5    46   | 38   9    16   |
| 38   4    5    | 1678 368  9    | 2    1678 168  |
+----------------+----------------+----------------+

There is a jellyfish on 8 in the rows and a complementary jellyfish on 8 in the columns.

A complementary whale/squirmbag! That's great. Obviously I was not setting my sights high enough.

My compliments on finding that.

I changed Whale to Starfish -- an alternative to Squirmbag -- in my post above. That's what I get for working on puzzles in the middle of the night. _ Embarassed _

Code:
Size of Fish:

1. 1-Fish (aka Cyclopsfish): All elements are in 1 x 1 sector
2. X-Wing                  : All elements are in 2 x 2 sectors
3. Swordfish               : All elements are in 3 x 3 sectors
4. Jellyfish               : All elements are in 4 x 4 sectors
5. Squirmbag (aka Starfish): All elements are in 5 x 5 sectors
6. Whale                   : All elements are in 6 x 6 sectors
7. Leviathan               : All elements are in 7 x 7 sectors

That's not hard: You know something is there, and you know which cells it eliminates.

Or, Sudoku Susser will show it to you. Laughing

i did not intend to imply that i found a Squirmbag

what i was trying to say is,
take all rows not involved in the Swordfish,
and all columns not involved in the Swordfish,
      = the complement

        the complement is a fish
        (in the present case a Squirmbag);

it is equivalent to the original Swordfish
        (equivalent -- same exclusions)
