Hugh, maybe that happens after a few moves, but the only elimination that I can see is -8ric4.

I think Marty's right that the only 'direct' result of the XY wing is the elimination of the 8 from r1c4 - but that does immediately leave r3c5 with the only remaining 8 in box 2.

It does indeed leave one 8 in box 2. I hate to sound petty and technical, but things might be more understandable if we standardize the way we report the result of a move. The whole idea of pincers is to preclude the number from any cell that sees both pincers. In this case, a subsequent result might be some cell = 4, but the reader can more readily see what's happening when the direct result of the move is posted.
