I solved this one with only basic eliminations, which makes me think I must have made a lucky mistake early on. I might retry it.

Same here. I finished the puzzle with only basic eliminations, and I'm wondering if I made some kind of mistake (which happened to lead to a solution). |

Solution: You've got locked 9's in column 2 of box 7.

I cannot find any way to solve the Jul 26 Hard puzzle without using advanced (VH) techniques. Basic elimination gets me to here:

look at row 7.
The fives in row 7 must be in box 9.
That'll help you get going again.
(BTW, the x-wing (5) cols 2 and 5 provides exactly the same eliminations)

I'm probably dozing, but how can I solve this puzzle from here without using advanced techniques? There's an obvious X-wing that will solve the puzzle, but we're supposed to be able to solve hard puzz ... |
