An xyz-wing opens an xy-wing which solves the puzzle.

Same solution here - agreed, a very nice puzzle, with a gentle start but a couple of advanced techniques needed later on to get the brain-cells active.

Unfortunately I used the same xyz and xy wings. Was hoping to be first to spot a Type 6 UR or an APE or some other exotic solution. There ain't none.
Shouldn't complain though, cos there seem to be a plethora of VHs lately. |

Welcome to the forum. You've got locked candidates. In box 3 the 7s can be only in column 9, so the other 7s in that column have to go. See where that takes you.

Think I started this mess now I better clear it up.
sapienti sat is Latin and means "For those who know, this is enough".
[Think of homo sapiens and satisfaction ; man who has knowledge and getting enough]

Probably one of the most well known numbers among computer people.

I should've put a smiley in there, as I did realize that Sapienti was not an Italian gentleman using a chair.
I did not realize the significance of the number 256. I was wondering why you didn't also tell us that the XY-Pivot contained the cube root of 50653, or something along those lines. |

I figured it had to be something simple but sometimes you just can't see it.
I feel dumb but relived to get the answer.

I have to look carefully and systematically. Check each box for a trivalue cell (the XYZ). See if the same box contains XZ (or YZ, if you will). Then check to see if the same line (row or column) as the XYZ has the third component. Maybe there are better ways, but that's the only way I know. |

I hope I am not too late & that someone remembers this & can straighten me out. After 2 & a half years, I am very comfortable solving samgj's puzzles with X/XY/XYZ Wings; so I now start out looking for other things like W Wings to work on improving my other techniques. I thought I found a W Wing on 37 (R4C4 & R9C3) connected by a strong link on 7 in C5. Although it did not do anything, I tried to color on it since both R4 & R9 are strong linked on 3. Extending to R4C7 as red & R9C8 as green, I thought I could eliminate 3 from R5C8. It didn't work. What did I do wrong?

| I once made the same sort of mistake, Dave. The ends of a W-wing (and XY-wing, skyscraper, etc.) aren't connected by a conjugate link: they might both be true. It follows that it's wrong to colour one link each side, but would be OK to colour 2 (or any even number) on from either end. Hope that brief expo helps. |
