okay here's the thing. i never saw a UR the 3 was already gone. the interesting thing is that the puzzle solves. i checked my numbers they are all different no duplicates in any row column or box. but the problem is i can xx around the 2s and 9s and solve it also. I know that that makes it an illegal puzzle, but it's solved. it's easier to start over when the puzzle doesn't solve than when it does. oh well, maybe tomorrow just to see how it resolves. |

smileys:
when one clicks on the emoticon, a character string appears in the text. Like :) or :D or , etc.
If smileys are enabled (either per default in the user profile or by un-checking the box below the text) then the smileys appear in graphical representation in the final post and others can see the images.
If smileys are disabled (either in the profile or by checking the box "Disable Smilies in this post") then the text string appears as it is. Sometimes this is necessary, otherwise strings like (35-58) come out as the "cool" emoticon at the end.
cgordon, the way you describe what happens, I think you might have smileys disabled. |

In strict mathematical terms a puzzle has a unique solution when there is one and only one solution. Looks like our puzzle actually has at least 3 solutions. Two of these use 2's and 9's at the corners of the UR, and the "unique" solution keeps the 3 in R8,C1. In a sense we are forcing uniqueness by picking the 3. |

Not at all.
It has only one solution.
Please post the other 2 so called "solutions" (the ones with the interchangeable twos and nines) and I am sure people here will be glad to point out the error.
(Hint: there is a solution path using the x-wing and xy-wing and it arrives at a unique solution) |

I agree with nataraj. that there's one solution to be reached by the usual uncontroversial "advanced" techniques. I needed an xyz-wing (and a couple of tricky triples) before reaching an x-wing and an xy-wing.
Altogether a most enjoyable and very "very hard" puzzle. (I also don't like URs etc) |
