I need some help getting the 7 in R6C8, which is what the hint tells me is a 7.
An explanation for this newbie, would be much appreciated.

| 2 5 367 | 378 4 38 | 1 678 9 |

Hi, welcome. Your grid didn't display properly by the way. (I'll leave somebody who's more into that stuff than me to explain why.) Here it is again. Code: |
+------------+------------------+-------------+
| 4 138 137 | 9 1378 6 | 2 78 5 |
| 2 5 367 | 378 4 38 | 1 678 9 |
| 9 168 167 | 5 178 2 | 478 4678 3 |
+------------+------------------+-------------+
| 8 39 2 | 37 379 345 | 4579 1 6 |
| 7 139 1359 | 1368 13689 13458 | 459 459 2 |
| 6 4 159 | 2 179 15 | 3 579 8 |
+------------+------------------+-------------+
| 1 2 69 | 368 368 7 | 589 589 4 |
| 5 69 4 | 168 2 18 | 89 3 7 |
| 3 7 8 | 4 5 9 | 6 2 1 |
+------------+------------------+-------------+

There's a naked triple 39/37/379 in r4. That removes the 3 from r4c6, and the 79 from r4c7. Now the 7 in r6c8 is the only one left in that box, and can be put there, as per hint. (PS you were lucky: sometimes it's hard to make sense of the hints!) |

kermitbone,
there is a naked triple 379 in row 4 that should help you along.
and please insert blanks into your grid so the columns are aligned. Makes it much easier to look at |

You're the resident computer expert. I discovered this phenomenon a long time ago. If you copy his grid and add the
tag at the end, it's unaligned. However, if you hit "Quote" before your reply and add the
tag at the end, it aligns. Why? Someone tried to explain it some time ago but I didn't understand it.
Kermitbone, welcome to the forum. There is an article in the Site Help forum on how to post an aligned grid. |

Amazing ...
it worked! Would not thought that "quote"'d make a difference. But it does.
As to why ... beats me.
But a good feature ("It's not a bug, it's a feature!") to know...
edit: must be genuine magic.
In the original post there is exactly one blank space between the numbers. No wonder it does not align. The "quote" button must do some analyzing on its own ... weird.
I hate it when programs develop their own intelligence. |

Not that mysterious! The original is missing the [ / code ] tag at the end of the grid.

I found a hidden pair 45, 45 in r4 solved this sudoku for me, that left a 7 in r6c8. |

Puzzle about non-aligned grid solved:
The blank spaces had been there all the time.
In other words, kermitbone had posted a perfectly readable, well aligned grid.
But ...
The forum software removes all "superfluous" blanks from normal text lines, so the blanks needed to align the grid were not shown because kermitbone forgot the closing /code tag.
But they were not removed from the original post. Therefore, when one hits the "quote" button, the original text - including all blanks - is displayed in the text area.

I was wrong when I assumed that the "quote" button would display magical intelligence.
It is the text display function. |

Thanks for the help on the puzzle and correctly posting the puzzle.
I do know a little bit about html and should have realized when you have an opening tag such as Code: | , you always need a closing tag | .
Thanks for cutting me a little slack on my first post. I am anxious to improve my skills. I don't often have problems with H difficulties, but often have problems with VH.
Thanks again, |

Hi Kermitbone
I'm a couple of weeks ahead of you, can solve most of the VHs now. Can I recommend the http://www.brainbashers.com/sudokuhelp.asp site. I found it to be the clearest explanations of the various techniques.
Good luck
