There's a skyscraper in c34 which eliminates the 5s in r1c6 and r2c2. Then there's a standard ER based on the 8s in c8, which removes 8 from r2c2. And then there's an interesting ER again based on the 8s in c8. If you bounce them round a little bit, you can say that they both 'see' the 8 in r1c2. (Yes, no doubt you can see this as an x-xycle of some sort.) That exposes an X-wing in 8s in c67, which takes us to: Code: |
+-----------+-------------+-------------+
| 3 457 457 | 6 9 48 | 78 2 1 |
| 2 47 6 | 58 1458 145 | 3 78 9 |
| 8 9 1 | 7 3 2 | 4 6 5 |
+-----------+-------------+-------------+
| 9 257 57 | 58 258 6 | 1 4 2378 |
| 1 3 4 | 9 28 7 | 6 5 28 |
| 6 257 8 | 4 125 135 | 9 37 237 |
+-----------+-------------+-------------+
| 4 6 2 | 1 58 9 | 57 378 37 |
| 5 8 9 | 3 7 4 | 2 1 6 |
| 7 1 3 | 2 6 58 | 58 9 4 |
+-----------+-------------+-------------+
| More later if nobody else gets in first or finds a better way to do it!
Edit: realise I hadn't cleaned up the grid properly: I think it's actually finished in effect.

Perhaps not better, but different.
A skyscraper in 5's eliminates 5 from R1C6, the another skyscraper in 8's eliminates 8 from R2C2, making possible an xy-wing of 478 which eliminates the 4 from R3C3, to open the puzzle. Lots of fun!

Earl,
Your two Skyscrapers alone solve the puzzle. Be sure to make all the eliminations, however. The first eliminates <5> from r2c2 as well as r1c6. The second eliminates <8> from r3c7 as well as r2c2. This determines r3c3 as <1> so there's no XY Wing. Later, you must spot a 478 Naked Triple in c6. |

I'm a couple of weeks behind on these things, but this puzzle wasn't worthy of the "diabolical" rating. It affects nothing, but the 3 comes out from r6c9 to preclude a DP. The 14 UR in boxes 14 solves r3c1 = 8. After the eliminations therefrom, one ER on 5 finished it off. |

Multi-coloring on 8s is a single move that solves this puzzle.
