There is a gaping hole in the history of this forum between November 2006 and February 2007. Now I've started to do the "missing" puzzles, but it seems like x-wing was the only technique deemed "very hard" then ...
Nov 2: xwing (on 2, rows 2 and 6)
Nov 4: basics only
Nov 8: xwing (on 1, cols 1 and 6)
hm. Maybe that's why there were no more discussions? |

That is correct, the X-Wing was all that was required for some time and solving was pretty predictable. I don't recall when the XY and XYZ were added. |

I guess I'll try a few samples, maybe one out of every month ...
Afterthought: might do a binary search (start in the middle of the gap, if still only x-wing, try middle of later half)
But what you are saying is that these puzzles have already been discussed ?
Hm ... I came here much later. Anyways, I'll give it a shot (always need a fresh supply of puzzles for plane trips  ) |

Success:
The Jan.15,2007 vh sports an xy-wing!
It can be solved by (multi-)coloring, but no x-wing as far as I can see.

As I recall, Sam implemented X-, XY-, and XYZ- wings at the same time.
The first puzzle that required anything other than the basics, an X-wing, was May 2, 2006.
If I were to choose one set of puzzles to take to a desert island, I would take the last two years of this site's "very hard". Exactly my speed, for pencil and paper.

Keith, my recollection is different. I recall X-Wings as the only required technique for some time. The puzzles were very predictable, as I mentioned above. Do the basics, find the obligatory X-Wing and the puzzle was done. I think he added XY and XYZ later. |

Nataraj,
Just to be clear: Any of this site's "Very Hard" puzzles can be solved by X-, XY-, and / or XYZ-wings.
Which spoils it a little for me, since I tend to look for these wings rather than for other solution methods.
