I have never before been the first person to initiate the VH post. Guess I am the only person that has resorted to playing Sudoku the night after Christmas.
In any case, I solved it as an easy one-stepper: Quote: | xy-wing <347> with pivot <37 in r2c8
|
What was more interesting to me was another xy-wing where one of the pincers is determined as a chain.
Code: |
*-----------------------------------------------------------*
| 37 9 1 | 5 6 47 | 34 2 8 |
| 8 2 3457 | 1 9 47 | 6 37 457 |
| 57 6 457 | 3 2 8 | 9 17 1457 |
|-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
| 679 13 67 | 4 8 2 | 5 1367 179 |
| 4 18 567 | 9 3 56 | 17 1678 2 |
| 569 38 2 | 7 1 56 | 34 368 49 |
|-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
| 36 4 9 | 2 7 1 | 8 5 36 |
| 2 5 8 | 6 4 3 | 17 9 17 |
| 1 7 36 | 8 5 9 | 2 4 36 |
*-----------------------------------------------------------* |
The pivot cell is <34> in r1c7.
If r1c7=3 => r2c8=7
If r1c7=4 =>r6c7=3 => r6c2=8 => r5c2=1 => r5c7=7
r45c8<>7
The logic seems valid to me. The resultant pseudo-cell <47> is formed as a result of the additional bivalues <38> & <18> to form a chain.
I would appreciate some comments from the more "knowledgeable" folks.

I don't know what kind of knowledge you are seeking. However, ...
Code: | You created a 6-cell XY-Chain a -b -c -d -e -f => [r45c8]<>7
73-34-43-38-81-17
+--------------------------------------------------------------+
| 37 9 1 | 5 6 47 | b34 2 8 |
| 8 2 3457 | 1 9 47 | 6 a37 457 |
| 57 6 457 | 3 2 8 | 9 17 1457 |
|--------------------+--------------------+--------------------|
| 679 13 67 | 4 8 2 | 5 136-7 179 |
| 4 e18 567 | 9 3 56 | f17 168-7 2 |
| 569 d38 2 | 7 1 56 | c34 368 49 |
|--------------------+--------------------+--------------------|
| 36 4 9 | 2 7 1 | 8 5 36 |
| 2 5 8 | 6 4 3 | 17 9 17 |
| 1 7 36 | 8 5 9 | 2 4 36 |
+--------------------------------------------------------------+
# 48 eliminations remain

No need of chains. If r1c7=3=>r2c8=7. Also, If r1c7=4=>r1c6=7. This eliminates 7 in r2c6 which solves the puzzle. |

A 1-step xy-wing <3> did it for me. I couldn't believe how many eliminations I made using locked candidates. |
