I spent a couple of pleasant hours on this one and didn't find a shorter path than Norm's. Here is my simplest effort.
ER in box 6 or 2-string kite from box 4, on 2s.
Code: | .------------------.------------------.------------------.
| 28 1 248 | 3 58 6 | 9 7 45 |
| 7 368 468 | 9 58 1 | 2346 238 456 |
| 368 5 9 | 2 7 4 | 36 38 1 |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 2346 236 5 | 1 9 7 | 8 23 46 |
| 468 68 7 | 5 2 3 | 46 1 9 |
| 23 9 1 | 6 4 8 | 7 5 23 |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 1 7 28 | 4 6 5 | 23 9 238 |
| 5 268 268 | 7 3 9 | 1 4 8-2 |
| 9 4 3 | 8 1 2 | 5 6 7 |
'------------------'------------------'------------------' |
W-wing using 46 pair as the endpoints.
Code: | .------------------.------------------.------------------.
| 28 1 #24 | 3 58 6 | 9 7 #45 |
| 7 368 *46 | 9 58 1 | 2346 238 45-6 |
| 368 5 9 | 2 7 4 | 36 38 1 |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 2346 236 5 | 1 9 7 | 8 23 *46 |
| 468 68 7 | 5 2 3 | 46 1 9 |
| 23 9 1 | 6 4 8 | 7 5 23 |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 1 7 8 | 4 6 5 | 23 9 23 |
| 5 26 26 | 7 3 9 | 1 4 8 |
| 9 4 3 | 8 1 2 | 5 6 7 |
'------------------'------------------'------------------' |
ALS or 5 cell xy-chain. Same cells and eliminations.
Code: | .--------------.----------.--------------.
|*28 1 24 | 3 58 6 | 9 7 45 |
| 7 36-8 46 | 9 58 1 | 236 238 45 |
| 368 5 9 | 2 7 4 | 36 38 1 |
:--------------+----------+--------------:
| 4 *23 5 | 1 9 7 | 8 23 6 |
| 6-8 *68 7 | 5 2 3 | 4 1 9 |
|*23 9 1 | 6 4 8 | 7 5 23 |
:--------------+----------+--------------:
| 1 7 8 | 4 6 5 | 23 9 23 |
| 5 *26 26 | 7 3 9 | 1 4 8 |
| 9 4 3 | 8 1 2 | 5 6 7 |
'--------------'----------'--------------' |
This gets us to a skyscraper or a remote pair or a BUG, your choice? |

I had a four step solution.
1) Either multi-coloring on <2> or a Type 6 UR28 with strong link on <8> in col9. They both provide the same final result.
2) xyz-wing 456 with pivot at r2c9
3) Coloring on <3>
4) BUG+1 sets r2c2=6

I started out with an XY-Wing Chain (28-23-23-23-3. Then a Hidden UR (2, multi- and single coloring (3), two ERs (6, 2) and a W-Wing (46).
(I give up, you figure it out, I can't avoid the unintended smileys).
That brought me here:
Code: |
+-----------+--------+----------+
| 28 1 24 | 3 58 6 | 9 7 45 |
| 7 368 46 | 9 58 1 | 26 23 45 |
| 36 5 9 | 2 7 4 | 36 8 1 |
+-----------+--------+----------+
| 4 23 5 | 1 9 7 | 8 23 6 |
| 68 68 7 | 5 2 3 | 4 1 9 |
| 23 9 1 | 6 4 8 | 7 5 23 |
+-----------+--------+----------+
| 1 7 8 | 4 6 5 | 23 9 23 |
| 5 26 26 | 7 3 9 | 1 4 8 |
| 9 4 3 | 8 1 2 | 5 6 7 |
+-----------+--------+----------+

It's an obvious BUG+1. But I had more fun with the W-Wing on 26 in r2c7 and r8c2. This is connected by three strong links on 6. R3c7>>r3c1>>r5c1>>r5c2. Then transport the 2 pincer from r2c7 to r4c8, taking out the 2 from r4c2. |

Marty,
If you go into edit mode, you will see that 8) is the "cool" smiley.
You should click the option "Disable Smilies in this post".
By the way, this is the reason I use <> instead of () in my messages. Fewer unintended consequences.

Thanks Keith, that's useful info. This wasn't the first time it's happened. |
