No, I didn't find that one. But I heard about this one:

Darn! Yep. Multiple solutions to that one. I guess it was a little too much to ask that I make it to a year without creating a duff.
Sorry all -- puzzle view labelled in an attempt to avoid further confusion.

Commiserations.
However, this may be an example of a step too far.
The multiple was on a "monster" puzzle.
There is still a clean record on the standard 9x9 puzzle, is there not?
Long may the 9x9 continue.
It is the heart and soul of Sudoku and the others could be regarded
as distractions. Any business person knows that one HAS to keep the
core business working well and that forays into other areas have to
be undertaken with a degree of caution that includes considerable
amounts of planning and the possible diversion of resource to the core
activity. Please innovate - but not at the cost of quality of the core
product! We do not NEED monster puzzles but the addicts among us
would be lost without our daily fix of 9x9.

Indeed there is. And hopefully the obvious admission on the site retains confidence in the puzzle set as a whole.

Well I take your point, but it's not quite the model that I subscribe to. Innovation keeps things fresh and interesting, hopefully for both you and me. Not only that, but early release of new things, with the inevitable occasional screw-up, enables much faster development through the excellent feedback that an active user base can provide. And you never know, one day I might manage to provide something that replaces the 9x9 sudoku in your affections :)

Luckily, a day job means that profitable business has never been the primary driver here -- this is entirely secondary to the interest in puzzles and the pride and kick out of providing something that people enjoy.

You're probably not going to think much of my Christmas Advent Sudokus then :)

In retrospect, I kind of liked it. I was the hardest puzzle I had done for quite some time. Nowadays the very hards are still just like 15 minutes. Whereas for that one, at a couple points in the puzzle I swear there was no way to determine any subsequent square, and I had to go off and just guess on some squares and see if any contradictions arose. Perhaps I should start a new style of sudoke, where a handful of solutions are possible. |

If my brute-force solver/enumerator can be believed, this puzzle had a total of 143 possible solutions.
I wrote it a while back when I was playing with the question of how many valid ways there were to fill the 9x9 grid. Someone gave me a link to the analysis before I got there, but I noted along the way that I had completely as a by-product written something that could quite quickly solve a regular 9x9 sudoku from initial position.
I spent a while today replacing "9" with "GRIDSIZE" and "3" with "BLOCKWIDE" and "BLOCKHIGH", then a while xx around which of those was which, and expanded it to handle 12x12 and 16x16 puzzles -- other sizes are possible, with adaptions for the symbol set.
Anyway, it's not very quick at all to solve a very-hard 12x12, but it gets there eventually. I spent the time because I was wondering about the "how many solutions" question on the Nov. 28 monster. Once I got the code working, I started it running on the Nov. 28 monster, augmented by the 5 cells that I'd managed to figure out for absolute sure, myself, and it produced, as initially mentioned, a list of 143.
The only other item of potential interest I can think of is to note that there are only 7 cells other than those given that are the same in all possible solutions. All 143 contain
--23 --6- -198
-B4- --1- ---5
-16- --3- --4-
28B- C45- 63--
6-C- --73 2---
1--- 9--6 ----
---- 3--2 ---C
-C-2 67-- -8-3
---1 -C48 -B2-
-9-- -5-- -7--
32-- -6-- -C1-
741- -3-- 85--
where the bolded cells are the ones not originally given.
Never thought you'd hear the words "sudoku" and "monday-morning quarterback" in the same sentence, did you?
