I'm still working my way through medium puzzles. Every time I think I can progress to the harder puzzles, I get one that stumps me.

Below is what I had when I got stuck.

Code:

+-----------+-------------+------------+
| 4   8  7  | 16   16 2   | 5   3   9  |
| 2   16 3  | 5    4  9   | 16  7   8  |
| 5   9  16 | 8    3  7   | 2   4   16 |
+-----------+-------------+------------+
| 3   5  9  | 7    16 8   | 4   2   16 |
| 7   16 4  | 1369 2  36  | 8   169 5  |
| 16  2  8  | 4    59 56  | 7   169 3  |
+-----------+-------------+------------+
| 8   3  16 | 69   7  4   | 169 5   2  |
| 69  7  5  | 2    8  1   | 3   69  4  |
| 169 4  2  | 369  59 356 | 169 8   7  |
+-----------+-------------+------------+

I hated getting a hint, but I did anyway. It put a 6 in r2c7. I cannot figure out why! Maybe my brain isn't working today.
Thanks in advance to anyone that will point out the obvious for me.

Welcome to the forum Karin!!!

For some reason, the solver seems to be one step ahead of the PM you listed. If you look at <1> in column 7 [c7] and the intersection with box 9 [b9], you have a Locked Candidate 1 step that'll delete <1> from [r2c7]. This leaves a Naked Single <6> in [r2c7] ... and this matches the hint you reported.

Regards, Danny

The reason I say listed is because pressing the Play link loads the puzzle after both of the steps I described.

Thank you, Danny.

I had copied the ASCII code after the hint and then when I pasted it here I added the <1> back into [r2c7].

Are you saying the <169>'s in [r7c7] and [r9c7] eliminate the <1> in [r2c7]?

This one below is what I should have originally listed.

Code:

+-----------+-------------+------------+
| 4   8  7  | 16   16 2   | 5   3   9  |
| 2   16 3  | 5    4  9   | 16  7   8  |
| 5   9  16 | 8    3  7   | 2   4   16 |
+-----------+-------------+------------+
| 3   5  9  | 7    16 8   | 4   2   16 |
| 7   16 4  | 1369 2  36  | 8   169 5  |
| 16  2  8  | 4    59 56  | 7   169 3  |
+-----------+-------------+------------+
| 8   3  16 | 69   7  4   | 169 5   2  |
| 69  7  5  | 2    8  1   | 3   69  4  |
| 169 4  2  | 369  59 356 | 169 8   7  |
+-----------+-------------+------------+

(Still trying to figure all this out)

Yes. In box 9, the value <1> must lie in C7. So, R2C7 cannot be <1>. This is called a line (column, in this case) box intersection.

Best wishes, and welcome!

OK. I think I'm getting it. Took me a while to work it out in my head.

I just could not get past why it was the <1> eliminated and not the <6> in [r2c7]. But now I see that in box 9, there is no other option for the 1 except in [r7c7] or [r9c7] !!!

Danny and Keith - Thanks so much for your help!
