Danny,
This puzzle is quite a bit harder than I'd expect.
I need a wxyz to solve it (an ALS).
I don't see an xy-chain that can do it. |

wapati: No XY-Chain necessary for VH+ puzzles ... or any T_nn series puzzles. (see below)
However, you'll probably need a grouped 2-String Kite (or two) to get the puzzle to reduce to something easier.
===== ===== ===== ===== ===== ===== ===== ===== ===== Ratings are Accumulative
Basics: Naked/Hidden Single, Naked Pair/Triple, Locked Candidate 1/2
Basics+: Naked Quad, Hidden Pair/Triple/Quad
VH: BUG+1, UR Type 1, X-Wing, XY-Wing, XYZ-Wing
VH+: 2-String Kite, Empty Rectangle, Remote Pair, Skyscraper, finned/Sashimi X-Wing, UR Type 2
Advanced: M-Wing, W-Wing, XY-Chain, other URs
Extreme: Chain |

Too bad, I was hoping you'd post a picture of yourself in a kilt.
VH+ solution: 2x grouped 2-String Kite, X-Wing, 2x XY-Wing.
Code: | r9 b9 Locked Candidate 1 <> 1 [r9c23]
r3 b1 Locked Candidate 1 <> 8 [r3c89]
c9b9 Locked Candidate 1 <> 8 [r23c9]
c6b4 Empty Rectangle <> 1 [r3c2] extraneous
c6b4 Empty Rectangle <> 2 [r3c3] extraneous
r4 b9 Empty Rectangle <> 9 [r9c2] extraneous
r1c1 2-String Kite (grouped) <> 2 [r8c7]
r1c1 2-String Kite (grouped) <> 3 [r8c7]
c38 X-Wing <> 9 [r3c19],[r9c9] -or-
r27 X-Wing <> 9 [r3c19],[r9c9]
c1 Naked Pair <> 23 [r2c1]
r3 Naked Triple <> 235 [r3c23]
XY-Wing [r7c2]/[r5c2]+[r8c3] <> 3 [r5c3],[r9c2] -or-
XY-Wing [r8c3]/[r5c3]+[r7c2] <> 1 [r5c2]
XY-Wing [r1c3]/[r3c2]+[r8c3] <> 8 [r3c3],[r7c2]

I cannot post a sitting "Kilt" pic because I don't cross my legs.
Would you please post a markup of a group kite? |

I don't see the grouped kite. Can you help?

Since Danny has not responded, I will give you my understanding of what I believe is a "grouped kite". (Note I have never heard of this before, but it is consistent with other uses of "groups". Earlier today I posted a step using a "grouped strong link" for a w-wing.)
Looking at the posted code, note the digit <2> in box1, col1 and row1. Cells r23c1 form a grouped strong link with r8c1 and r1c23 form a grouped strong link with r1c7. These two strong link then are a normal kite that will delete <2> from r8c7.
A similar situation exists for digit <3> in box 1, col1 and row1 except that the strong link in col1 is not grouped, but the strong link in row1 is grouped.
The first time I saw a post with a "grouped link" I had to literally analyze the situation to verify if every digit involved actually provided the claimed deletion.
Hopefully this info is correct and will be of help, otherwise we wait for Danny's detailed input.

Thanks Ted,
I can see the groups -- but both are different one results in a 19 pair the other removes 2's in box 1 outside of column 1. How do you go about spotting one of these creatures? |

An ungrouped 2-String Kite uses ungrouped strong links in a row and column ... with a box in common holding a single endpoint from each strong link. This is your most basic Multiple Colors pattern. It's also one of the basic Turbot Fish patterns.
Code: | ungrouped 2-String Kite r1c1 with b1 holding an endpoint from each strong link
+-----------------------------------+
| \ \ X | \ \ \ | X \ \ |
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
| X . . | . . . | . . . |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
| X . . | . . . | -X . . |
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
+-----------------------------------+
|
A grouped 2-String Kite uses grouped strong links in a row and/or column ... with a box in common. This is an advanced Colors pattern.
Code: | grouped 2-String Kite r1c1 with b1 holding two endpoints from each grouped strong link
+-----------------------------------+
| \ X X | \ \ \ | X \ \ |
| X . . | . . . | . . . |
| X . . | . . . | . . . |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |
| X . . | . . . | -X . . |
| \ . . | . . . | . . . |

I think you'll see a similarity in the candidate grids for 2/3 below.
Code: | +-----------------------------------+
| . *2 *2 | . . . | *2 . . |
| *2 . . | . 2 . | 2 . 2 |
| *2 2 2 | . 2 2 | . . 2 |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| . . . | . . . | . 2 . |
| . 2 2 | . . 2 | . . . |
| . . 2 | . 2 . | . . . |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| . . . | 2 . . | . . . |
| *2 . 2 | . . . | -2 . 2 |
| . 2 2 | . . . | 2 . 2 |
+-----------------------------------+
+-----------------------------------+
| . *3 *3 | . . . | *3 . . |
| . . . | . . 3 | . . . |
| *3 3 3 | . . . | . . 3 |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| . . . | 3 . . | . . . |
| . 3 3 | . . . | . . . |
| . . . | . . . | . 3 . |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| . . . | . 3 . | . . . |
| *3 . 3 | . . . | -3 . 3 |
| . 3 3 | . . . | 3 . 3 |

Thanks Danny
I see it now. It is amazing how something can be right there and you can't see it. Then when you do you don't see anything else.
Keep these great puzzles comming! |

It was brought to my attention that two overlapping 2-String Kites form a continuous loop with additional assignments/eliminations. Hold onto your hat for this jewel. It joins two independent AICs into one continuous AIC loop.
Code: | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 5 1237 1237 | 8 4 9 | 23-17 17 6 |
| 129 4- 6- | 7 125 3 | 129 8 259 |
| 1239 1789-23 1789-23 | 6 125 12 | 4 179 23579 |
|-------------------------+-------------------------+-------------------------|
| 4 19 5 | 3 17 8 | 6 2 79 |
| 7 123 123 | 9 6 12 | 8 5 4 |
| 8 6 29 | 5 27 4 | 79 3 1 |
|-------------------------+-------------------------+-------------------------|
| 19 189 4 | 2 3 7 | 5 6 89 |
| 23- 5 2378 | 1 9 6 | 7-23 4 2378 |
| 6 2379 2379 | 4 8 5 | 12379 179 2379 |
*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------*
|
Code: | (2)r1c7 = (2)r1c23 - (2)r23c1 = (2-3)r8c1 = (3)r3c1 - (3)r1c23 = (3)r1c7 { - (2)r1c7 }
=> [r1c7]=23, [r8c1]=23, [r23c23]<>23, [r8c7]<>23
