Bonus points if you get to the BUG+2 and solve it that way.

Code: | .------------------.------------------.------------------.
| 8 5 34 | 39 49 6 | 2 7 1 |
| 49 6 349 | 7 2 1 | 8 5 34 |
| 1 7 2 | 35 458 458 | 6 9 34 |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 59 E189 689 | 4 158 7 | 3 126 258 |
| 45 E148 468 |M125 3 258 | 9 -16 7 |
| 2 3 7 | 6 1589 589 | 15 4 58 |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 7 2 1 | 8 6 59 | 4 3 59 |
| 6 49 5 |M129 149 3 | 7 8 29 |
| 3 489 489 |M259 7 M2459 | 15 M12 6 |
'------------------'------------------'------------------' |
notice how the M-wing {1,2} marked "M" eliminates the 1 in r5c8, then the extensions on 1 marked E go on to eliminate the 1 in r4c8.
some singles
then xy-wing {4,8,9} removes 9 from r6c5
leaves a UR type 1 on {5,8} removes 5,8 from r4c5.
leaves this...
Code: | .---------------.---------------.---------------.
| 8 5 34 | 39 49 6 | 2 7 1 |
| 49 6 349 | 7 2 1 | 8 5 34 |
| 1 7 2 | 35 58 48 | 6 9 34 |
:---------------+---------------+---------------:
| 59 89 6 | 4 1 7 | 3 2 58 |
| 45 1 48 | 25 3 28 | 9 6 7 |
| 2 3 7 | 6 58 9 | 1 4 58 |
:---------------+---------------+---------------:
| 7 2 1 | 8 6 5 | 4 3 9 |
| 6 49 5 | 1 49 3 | 7 8 2 |
| 3 489 89 | 29 7 24 | 5 1 6 |
'---------------'---------------'---------------' |
BUG+2: r2c3 is 4 or r9c2 is 9, both cannot be false.
(9)r9c2 = (4)r2c3 - (4=3)r1c3 - (3=9)r1c4; r9c4 <> 9 |

Well, as usual, I solved the puzzle via the back door.
I started by looking at the bivalues, and found a xyz-wing 259. Then I checked single digits and found a skyscraper on 4 and an ER on 5. A xy-wing589, a xy-wing349 with a transported pincer, and a xy-wing489 were next. At this point I had a BUG+2 condition: r2c3=4 or r4c5=5 which dictates r2c1<>4 to solve the puzzle, or a Type 1 UR58 sets r4c5=1 to also solve the puzzle.
So Danny, what are the bonus points for Norm and I?

Ted, I'd be glad to issue 25 Bonus Points to you and Norm, but I haven't been able to duplicate your solution. I couldn't find your first XYZ-Wing, and your BUG+2 doesn't match the BUG+2 that Norm and I found. Total confusion here!
Regards, Danny |

Danny, I suggested that I used the "back door" to solve this puzzle.
I did not provide details of my steps originally, but will do so now. My code after basics is:
Code: |
*-----------------------------------------------------------*
| 8 5 34 | 39 49 6 | 2 7 1 |
| 49 6 349 | 7 2 1 | 8 5 34 |
| 1 7 2 | 35 458 458 | 6 9 34 |
|-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
| 59 189 689 | 4 158 7 | 3 126 258 |
| 45 148 468 | 125 3 258 | 9 16 7 |
| 2 3 7 | 6 1589 589 | 15 4 58 |
|-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
| 7 2 1 | 8 6 59 | 4 3 59 |
| 6 49 5 | 129 149 3 | 7 8 29 |
| 3 489 489 | 259 7 2459 | 15 12 6 |
*-----------------------------------------------------------*
|
xyz-wing 259 with pivot in r9c4 and pseudo-cell 25 in r9c78,
skyscraper 4 in r18c5,
ER 5 with hinge in box6 and strong link in row7,
xy-wing 589 with pivot 89 in r6c6,
xy-wing 349 with pivot 34 in r1c3. Transport 9 in r2c1 to r9c3 via r2c3; delete 9 in r9c4,
xy-wing 489 with pivot 48 in r3c6; delete 9 in r6c5, transport 9 r1c5 to r8c4 via r1c4; delete 9 in r9c6.
At this point, I have the following BUG+2 code: Code: |
*--------------------------------------------------*
| 8 5 34 | 39 49 6 | 2 7 1 |
| 49 6 349 | 7 2 1 | 8 5 34 |
| 1 7 2 | 35 45 8 | 6 9 34 |
|----------------+----------------+----------------|
| 59 19 6 | 4 158 7 | 3 2 58 |
| 45 18 48 | 15 3 2 | 9 6 7 |
| 2 3 7 | 6 58 9 | 1 4 58 |
|----------------+----------------+----------------|
| 7 2 1 | 8 6 5 | 4 3 9 |
| 6 4 5 | 19 19 3 | 7 8 2 |
| 3 89 89 | 2 7 4 | 5 1 6 |
*--------------------------------------------------*
|
Either r2c3=4 or r4c5=5 which dictates r2c1<>4 to solve the puzzle, or a Type 1 UR58 sets r4c5=1 to also solve the puzzle.

Ted, I'm awarding you double bonus points for being able to recreate a solution using a pseudo-cell and transports. |

I used a rare (for me) XYZ transport, ER (5), XY (895), W (48) and XY (489). |
