this is the grid after 2 xy-wings, {3,6,8}
and {2,4,9}
Code: | .---------------.---------------.---------------.
| 6 4 3 | 2 5 8 | 1 9 7 |
| 9 5 27 | 6 137 C13 | 24 D34 8 |
| 1 27 8 | 4 37 9 | 26 35 56 |
:---------------+---------------+---------------:
| 7 1 5 | 8 4 6 | 9 2 3 |
| 2 A38 6 | 7 9 B135 |F4-8 E45 15 |
| 4 38 9 | 15 13 2 | 68 7 156 |
:---------------+---------------+---------------:
| 3 267 27 | 9 8 17 | 5 16 4 |
| 5 9 1 | 3 6 4 | 7 8 2 |
| 8 67 4 | 15 2 157 | 3 16 9 |
'---------------'---------------'---------------' |
(8=3)A - (3)B = (3)C - (3=4)D - (4)E = (4)F; F is not 8 |

A four-stepper. XY (683), XY (368), XYZ (247) and XY (137) with pincer transport. |

I also had a four stepper using moves similar to some already posted.
xy-wing 279,
xy-wing 368,
xy-wing 249,
xy-wing 137 with pincer transport.

I was doing a four stepper with a 4 cell xy-chain.
Looking at your comments I found the pincer transport was at the same markup as my 4-cell chain.
That makes it a 3 stepper, you both have an unneeded xy-wing, as I see it.

I frequently have unneeded steps but the fun remains..........

For many, the enjoyment is in finding the fewest number of steps. For others, the enjoyment is in the trip and not how quickly they get to their destination.
For the latter group, I've been toying with the idea of posting Advanced puzzles where you may only post a solution with N-Plus steps (or more) ... where I determine "N" based on my solver's solution.
Anyone interested |

My normal sequence always seems to be a long road. Sometimes I take the time and effort to eliminate some of the unnecessary steps.
Yes, I think that your suggestion would be interesting as an infrequent approach, but a steady diet would not be fun. The unique solution or the shortest solution is still my goal, given that I can find any solution.

adding extra steps might be a fun way to achieve a particular grid.
remember when we were asked to find the BUG+2 grid? having a goal may be the justification needed to add extra steps.
also...
if there isn't a limit to how many more steps we can add, then I think we all know that the thread may never end. |

My tendency is to play any move that I happen to spot. I often take more moves than others do, but it's never been my goal to solve in as few steps as possible. Just looking to enjoy the puzzles. |

I think this idea should just stay that -- an idea. I don't see a practical way to implement a minimal number of steps. |
