After playing with several dead ends I wound up with: Quote: | skyscraper 8
w-wing 89 by 8

Dan,
you would think we were working on different puzzles because my path doesn't resemble yours at all.
Code: | .---------------------.---------------------.---------------------.
| 2 6 17 | 8 479 3 | 5 149 149 |
| 9 5 8 | 46 1 2 | 46 3 7 |
| 17 4 3 | 679 679 5 | 8 169 2 |
:---------------------+---------------------+---------------------:
| 6 3 479 | 2 789 89 | 1 5 489 |
| 47 2 4579 | 5679 36789 1 | 4679 4689 34689 |
| 8 1 579 | 5679 3679 4 | 679 2 369 |
:---------------------+---------------------+---------------------:
| 5 89 2 | 1 489 689 | 3 7 4689 |
| 14 89 146 | 3 5 7 | 2 14689 14689 |
| 3 7 146 | 49 2 689 | 469 14689 5 |
'---------------------'---------------------'---------------------' |
ER 1 removes 1 from r3c8
then there is a xyz-wing {4,8,9} in box 8 removes 9 from r7c6
both are present above.
leads too this UR deduction on {3,6} r56c59
the x-wing overlay on 3's helps create a strong inference on the 6 in r3c5
and the group of 6's in r78c9...
Code: | .---------------------.---------------------.---------------------.
| 2 6 7 | 8 49 3 | 5 149 149 |
| 9 5 8 | 46 1 2 |E46 3 7 |
| 1 4 3 | 7 C69 5 | 8 D69 2 |
:---------------------+---------------------+---------------------:
| 6 3 49 | 2 7 89 | 1 5 48 |
| 7 2 45 | 56 X368 1 | 9 468 X3468 |
| 8 1 59 | 569 X36 4 | 7 2 X36 |
:---------------------+---------------------+---------------------:
| 5 89 2 | 1 48 68 | 3 7 A4689 |
| 4 89 16 | 3 5 7 | 2 1689 B1689 |
| 3 7 16 | 49 2 689 |F4-6 14689 5 |
'---------------------'---------------------'---------------------' |
can make this chain
UR36[(6)AB = (6)C] - (6)D = (6)E; F is not 6 |

oops I left off a beginning er 1 that you found. I found it on an early list before I got lost.
I like your approach better. You are good with ur's. |

'---------------------'---------------------'---------------------' |
can make this chain
UR36[(6)AB = (6)C] - (6)D = (6)E; F is not 6 |
If you perform
<36> UR Type 4 [r56c59] => [r5c59]<>6
then you are left with
Skyscraper [r25c4] => [r3c8]<>6 |

thanx
IMO, the UR deductions are interesting if they can at least match the destructive power of the more commonly known moves such as w-wings, m-wings, skyscrapers, etc... or even the more common UR moves.
and...
regarding the puzzle by Danny, "Set XY_02 Puzzle 103"
in that particular puzzle there is another three step solution involving a UR deduction which circumvents the moves already posted. |

Norm, your overall insight and use of UR is something special. Danny, you also had a great move.
I started with a skyscraper on <1>, which had the identical result as the already posted ER1.
I then used a xy-wing 489 because my cleanup deleted the xyz-wing 489, but the result was the same again. Finally, I missed Danny's skyscraper on <6> and used a kite <6> which set up a Type 1 UR 36 that completed the puzzle.
I also found several longer paths; one had nine steps. Overall, a great puzzle.
