I got stuck with a longer path this time; I had some jelly on my fingers.
Quote:
x-wing 4,
finned JELLY on 9 in r3478c1256 with fin r8c3 that deletes r2c2,
finned x-wing on 9,
xy-wing 139,
Type 1 UR 23.

I just can't seem to get going on this one. I've used a couple of ERs on 4, Finned X-Wing on 9 and an XY-Wing Chain with pincer transport, 13-39-39-39-19 and find myself here with no apparent moves, at least apparent to me.

Code:

Rats!! How did that escape me? Of course, I've said many times that I can't spot hidden pairs, but generally catch the complementary subsets, 12346 quint in this case.

Thanks Dan. Embarassed

Unfortunately, the quint doesn't do anything, leaving me here:

This has a nasty 2-String Kites in <9>. And you're still not done.

Thanks. I don't know the difference between a Kite and a 2-String Kite. But I do see a Kite that will take out the 9 from r2c2, setting up a W-Wing on 13, but I don't know that that'll take me very far. I'll know in a while.

OK, one lousy little kite I didn't see blew it open. After the kite was the W-Wing on 13, an XY-Wing on 139 and a Type 1 UR on 23 to finish it off.

Thanks again, now I can get back to my life. Very Happy

You are very welcome Marty !

I have more puzzles with (2-String) Kites. I'll try and remember to post a warning with them. You're not the only one whose been stymied by them.

notice the cells marked.
if you remove the 9 in r2c2 then the xy-wing can be formed {1,3,9} in r2c2, r3c1, r3c6
that xy-wing would eliminate the 1 in r2c4...
also
if the xy-wing is false, the 9 in r2c2 is true...

xy-wing[(1,3)r2c2, (3,9)r3c1, (1,9)r3c5] = (9)r2c2 - (9)r4c2 = (9)r4c5 - (9=1)r5c4; r2c4 <> 1

this means that if the xy-wing is true then the 1 in r2c4 can't exist
and, if the xy-wing is false the 1 in r5c4 is true.
either way the 1 in r2c4 is false and can be eliminated.

after the dust settles... a UR type 1 {2,3} r35c89

finishes it.
