This puzzle is very difficult ... even with the elimination I provided.
Looking back, I realize that I missed adding a hint about a 2-String Kite in <5> being present. It's not grouped, but it allows an important Naked Quad to occur. |

Danny, is this puzzle solvable without a chain?
I found seven moves and hit the wall! I then checked your hit and found that I had made that deletion, but still unable to proceed.
I would appreciate the details if a not-chain solution exists.
Thanks,
Ted |

Yes, this puzzle is solvable w/o a chain ... provided you use the hint elimination. It's also a little easier if you perform the elimination first thing. Here's the solution if you wait to perform the elimination.
Code: | c5b2 Locked Candidate 1 <> 3 [r89c5]
r5 b4 Locked Candidate 1 <> 3 [r5c789]
r39 X-Wing <> 4 [r8c6]
r2c4 2-String Kite <> 5 [r6c9]
r47c1 Skyscraper <> 7 [r6c9],[r9c8]
c9 Naked Quad <> 3679 [r125c9]
r6 Naked Quad <> 3569 [r6c38]
r5 b6 Locked Candidate 1 <> 5 [r5c6]
XY-Wing [r2c9]/[r2c3]+[r3c8] <> 9 [r2c7],[r3c2]
XY-Wing [r2c3]/[r2c5]+[r3c2] <> 5 [r3c6]
c6b8 Locked Candidate 2 <> 5 [r9c5]
XY-Wing [r3c6]/[r3c2]+[r7c6] <> 5 [r7c2]
c2 Naked Pair <> 39 [r9c2]
r4 b3 Empty Rectangle <> 9 [r1c1]
finned Franken Swordfish r34b7\c168 <> 9 [r7c6]
XYZ-Wing [r7c1]/[r4c1]+[r7c2] <> 9 [r9c1]
b7 Naked Triple <> 457 [r7c1]
XYZ-Wing [r9c6]/[r8c4]+[r9c9] <> 9 [r9c5]
<39> UR Type 1 [r57c12] <> 39 [r5c1]
|
Obviously, alternate steps may be available, and even preferable, to those I listed. |

I'm stuck here, after some ERs (7, 4), W-Wing (49) and a kite (5).

I don't understand. Right off the bat I see Locked Candidate 2, but all 2s are solved. |

Locked Candidate 2 is a technique ... just like Naked Quad and XY-Wing
In this case:
Code: | Locked Candidate 2 on <9>
Naked Quad on <3679>
...

OK, thanks, but I don't know what a Locked Candidate 2 is as opposed to a Locked Candidate, aka Box-Line Interaction. But I see the 9s in column 3 are confined to box 1. I'm regressing to the level of a beginner when I start missing basics. |

My memory is swiss cheese anymore, so I have notes all over the place to help me. That's assuming, of course, that I can remember which notes file has the information ... or that I ever made a note about it!
Here's an entry that I tracked down:
Code: | box-to-line => Pointing => Locked Candidate (1)
line-to-box => Claiming => Locked Candidate (2)
|
I'm lazy and often disregard the parens.
Note: I expected this puzzle to qualify as a BBDB ... and not a nightmare. Sorry!!! |
