An alternative solution is:

Quote:
W-Wing on the 36s in boxes 78, connected by the 3s in the same boxes

I didn't find Crunched's xyz wing without his help. I had noticed that R1C4 contained the only 1 in col 4, and this led to a 36 pair in col5 which gave some more simplification in rows 6 and 9.

XYZ wings are my next resource after xy and x wings, but I've found recent ones tricky - need more, more, more .....

There is a swordfish on 3 which makes the xyz-wing into an xy_wing. Why use two steps when one will do?

Tose poor 3s inr89c1! A swordfis, jellyfish and a UR all are primed to eradicate them!

As for te puzzle, a w-wing makes te same elimination as te mentioned xyz wing.

Basics are not complete in the grid posted above. You can get to here:
Code:
+-------------+-------------+-------------+
| 57  9   4   | 1   36  8   | 2   36  57  |
| 37  6   8   | 34  2   5   | 9   1   47  |
| 2   1   35  | 346 7   9   | 8   36  45  |
+-------------+-------------+-------------+
| 6   45  9   | 7   14  12  | 3   25  8   |
| 1   45  2   | 39  8   34  | 7   59  6   |
| 8   3   7   | 69  5   26  | 4   29  1   |
+-------------+-------------+-------------+
|-34  7   1   | 5   9   34d | 6   8   2   |
| 359 2   356 | 8   36  7   | 1   4   39  |
| 349 8   36a | 2   14b 16c | 5   7   39  |
+-------------+-------------+-------------+
I used the 4-cell chain (extended XY-wing) abcd to take out <3> in R7C1.

Keith, strictly from a terminology standpoint, what makes that an Extended XY-Wing? I see either an XY-Chain or an XY-Wing using a pseudo cell.

Marty,
Yes. Some have called the 4-cell chain with a pseudo-cell an extended XY-wing.

If an XY-wing is XZ-XY-YZ, then I usually think of an extended wing as something like XZ-XY-XY-XY-YZ.
