Sort of why the USA got to the moon: The USA's German rocket scientists were better than the Soviet's German rocket scientists.
I suppose the Canadians' NHL hockey players are better than the USA's NHL hockey players.

Using logic I got down to this position.

A sweep showed nothing obvious. A hint gave 5 in r1c7. Why?
The site states that only logic is required to solve these puzzles, but I can't see
how they came up with that hint. Can anyone suggest why?

Hello mickfarmer, welcome to the forum!
You did all the basic steps that are possible, the grid is right after basics. A "VH" step is needed.
There is an x-wing (5) in rows 6 and 8.
It takes out three candidates: 5 in r1c8, r1c3, r7c8.
The resulting box / line interaction (5 in row 2 confined to cols 1 and 2) removes 5 from r2c7, which then leaves a hidden single 5 in r1c7. |

Hm, dunno what Sam had in mind, maybe it's just one of the "vh" moves his program recognizes. I did in fact use that x-wing in solving the puzzle. Some days I start looking for xy wings first, some days I look at individual candidates, a.k.a. "color"ing. Seems I did the Feb 28 vh on a colorful day  |

I suppose that is the difference between a Canadian and an American, at least as far as hockey goes. There was no way that I could do a Sudoku while watching that Game! I was so happy when Team Canada won!  ( I did it later, still so excited that I can't remember how I solved it)
