Two steps.
Quote: | type 1 UR48; r2c3<>48 which opens up a
xy-wing 12-5 with vertex 12 in r3c1 to complete the puzzle. |

There is a one stepper which I got footling around with various xy chains - in the end an AIC or almost xy (I know, XY chains are AICs too!!) was needed:
Quote: |
(2=1)r3c1-(1=5)r5c1-(5=48)r15c3-(8=2)r4c3
r2c3,r4c1 <> 2 ie an "almost xy chain" with extra candidate at r5c3 !
Grid: pincers in green, eliminated 2s in blue

Danny - I now understand what BBDB means but what do the A,B & C designations after your puzzles designate ?
Also, as a setter, do you hold with any of the different numeric attempts at "difficulty ratings" that are about ?
Apologies if this is the wrong part of the forum to ask. |

Of 26 available bivalues 25 will lead to successful one-stepper chains |

This sounds familiar.
You're going to have to ask Danny to suffix some of his puzzles with JFL or OOOS (only one one stepper) or NOS etc etc !
Speaking personally, I am not bothered by how many one-steppers there are - for some of us it is fun looking for them - especially as we are unable to compute whether there are 0 or 100 ! |

No problem with asking this question here.
In the past, I use to maintain multiple files with each file containing puzzles of a general difficulty level. I would label the puzzles based on the file used. This became a bookkeeping headache -- especially when forum members would find a solution other than the one found by my solver. So, I xx to just 2-3 files of puzzles and started using my current method of identifying puzzles.
I try to post a mix of puzzles for difficulty, and I post the puzzles with the easiest solution (according to my solver) first. I start with (A). If my solver uses more than four steps in its solution, then I only post one puzzle per day (max) and label it with ___ BBDB. As an experiment, I've recently started posting puzzles where my solver needed a chain. It's labeled ___ Chain.
Fow awhile, I was posting puzzles where my solver needed a W-Wing or M-Wing to complete the puzzle ... or to make it a one-stepper. I'm currently out of them and may generate more if requested. Right now, I have a few puzzles with XYZ-Wing(s) and I'm including a "hint" to that fact for those who run into a bottleneck.
Finally, there are the Salsa puzzles. I post them whenever members start complaining that BBDB isn't enough of a challenge. That usually satisfies for awhile. I'm currently out of Salsa puzzles, but can generate more if needed.
Regards, Danny |

Danny,
As you may or may not know I used to be a regular here about two years ago but life took over and I did no sudoku in the intervening period.
When I came back I could see that thanks to Marty and Keith et al that it had all evolved and this place is a really broad church now with a wide range of folks involved and really enjoying these puzzles.
People like Norm and Ted, Marty, Keith, Nat and you in particular, have really made this a great forum. I am learning a lot.
Many thanks and good luck with your syndicated columns (and rows/bands/stacks)!
