Enjoyable puzzle.

Quote:
UR 48 in r12c25. Looking at the outside column implications we find:
Digit 4: r5c2= 4
Digit 8: None
Thus r5c2 must equal 4 to prevent the deadly pattern.

x-wing 3 r38c15,

ALS[(3)r12c6 = (7)r1c6]r12c6 - r7c6 = r7c5 - (7=9)r4c5 - (9=3)r8c5; r7c6<>3.

Lots of options - but two simple steps does it...

Quote:
x-wing(3)
xy-wing(359 vertex r8c5; r1c4<>5

My X-Wing and XY-Wing were the same as Peter's. However, I first played the 48 UR because it was there, but apparently contributed nothing.

Marty and Peter, how did you zap the 3 in R9C4 to allow you to play the XY-wing 359 with the pivot on 39 in R8C5? Confused

Wendy,

Here is my (hasty) grid from trying it on Draw/Play:

Code:

+----------------+---------------+---------------+
| 14     148  2  | 3579 48   379 | 359  359  6   |
| 47     478  35 | 6    48   39  | 2    1    359 |
| 35     6    9  | 1    35   2   | 4    8    7   |
+----------------+---------------+---------------+
| 23579  379  8  | 4    379  1   | 6    2359 359 |
| 234579 3479 35 | 379  6    8   | 3579 2359 1   |
| 1379   1379 6  | 379  2    5   | 379  4    8   |
+----------------+---------------+---------------+
| 6      2    4  | 8    3579 379 | 1    359  359 |
| 39     5    1  | 2    39   6   | 8    7    4   |
| 8      39   7  | 359  1    4   | 359  6    2   |
+----------------+---------------+---------------+

The X-Wing on 3 in rows 38 takes out the 3 from r4c5. Now, locked candidates on 3 in box 5 force out the 3 from r9c4. Locked candidates are also known as box-line interactions.

Arghh!! Yes, of course. Thanks, Marty. This can be a humbling game.
