Danny, I don't think that I met the challenge.

AUR46 r12c34 with SL4 in r1c34 & r12c4; r2c3<>6,
Flightless xyz-wing 168 in r8c9 with transport: (1)r8c9 - (1=6)r8c6 - r5c6 = r5c7 - r13c7 = r23c9; r9c9<>6
xy-wing 2-46 with vertex 26 in r1c7; r2c4<>4,
ANP(68=7)r4c19 - (7=8_r2c9; r3c7<>8
ER2 with hinge in box9 SL r1c37; r7c3<>2
(8)r3c9 - (8=6)r3c1 - r4c1 = (6-4)r4c3 = (4-8)r2c3 = (8)r2c9; r3c9<>8
BUG+1 forces r4c2=8

Thanks, that was a fun puzzle! For me a 'finned xy-wing' was my advanced step ... hopefully this is OK as I haven't had even a sip of burgundy (yet!)

xy-wing(246) r2c4<>4
skyscraper(2) r7c3<>2
w-wing(68) (8=6)r3c1-r1c3=r1c7-(6=8)r5c7; r3c7<>8
"finned" xy-wing(268) (26)r1c3 pincers (68)r3c1, (28=3)r8c3-(3=1)r7c3-(1=8)r6c3; r2c3<>8
BUG+1; r4c2=8

Well this answer of mine is a bit of a dog's breakfast but I'd like to stick it up for discussion's sake.

1. Simple XY Wing 246 ; r2c4 <>4

2. Bifurcation along a discontinuous loop or "Bloated Baphomet"

There's a baphomet (discontinuous loop) which causes r6c3 <> 6

(18=6)r6c3-r1c3=r1c7-r5c7=r6c8-(6)r6c3 This loop shown in orange/green

BUT how about a bifurcated extension ? Follow it around again but start at r7c3 follow the same chain but when you get to the second orange cell at r5c7 instead take the strong link (pink) at r5c6 and continue the chain:
(123=6)r7c3-r1c3=r1c7-r5c7=r5c6-r8c6=r7c5-r7c3 and thus r7c3 <> 6

In effect this is either a simultaneous bifurcation or a "bloated" baphomet or you can view pincers for 6 at r1c3 r7c5 for the second elimination.

The result is r67c3<>6. I have no doubt this can be tidied up (or destroyed altogether!!)

3. XYZ wing 678 r3c7 <> 8 solves puzzle.

Afterthought - I wonder if Danny/Wapiti will see fish ? Ted will see something even more incredible and I will cement my reputation as "the barbarian at the gate" or worse......either way I'm off for a beer!

Cheers,

Mogul

Mogul
For me your move seems to be a "standard" colour trap

So here buddies of blue and orange are eliminated. I tried this but it didn't seem to help me.

I completely missed the xyz-wing - but for me this doesn't leave me with a basics-only grid? I've probably missed something in basics.

I started with an XY-Wing (264) and XYZ-Wing (678). I saw the Finned X-Wing (2) but didn't see much potential with it. There was a potential DP (18-89-19) in boxes 456. R4c3 needed to be 4 or 6 to kill it and either number solved box 7 the same way.

A nice example of Multi-Coloring Type 2, as coined by Angus Johnson circa 2005. It would be interesting to know if the "trap" and "wrap" terms preceded or followed the "multi-color" term.

I have been trying this method but I always look for agreement.

That is I would try the NP and look for what is set in the binary cells, then try the "fin" and see what is set.
When they agree I set that value. It is working well for me on paper. Smile

BTW, I did see a finned swordfish on twos, not of any use tho. Crying or Very sad

Thanks guys - feedback appreciated- the pull of the pub plus a mistransposition before the XYZ wing left me with a false ending! Embarassed
I liked the ANP to finish as suggested in the hint. Nice one Danny!

Ronk - I would wager that the multi-colouring term was first and the "trap" and "wrap" followed. I had an absence from the game for over a year and when I left I don't recall the colloquialisms but on returning, those terms seemed to be ubiquitous.

I do the same with these and have found it to be fairly sound.
