Mornin', beautiful people. I see this thread grew legs overnight!

The problem I have with this "almost" logic, is that any cell with two candidates is an "almost single". But, if we explore the implications of a bivalue cell being one value or the other, most people seem to view it as trial and error, or guessing.

An ANP is OK, but an either / or from a bivalue cell is not OK?

I can't put T&E and ALS in the same bucket.

An ALS (or AN* if you want) is providing the solver with one of the most essential tools in the box: a strong link.

A cell with two candidates? Fine, x=y (one must be true.) Two cells with three candidates? Also fine, xy=z, and so on.

These are logical statements requiring no leap into T&E. If such statements were to be avoided as tainted by T&E, all solving would be paralyzed, ALS or not.

Anyone who lives by their patterns should love almost patterns, because there are so many more "almost" than "naked." When puzzles get tougher, there are no naked patterns at all, anyway! What then? I say break out the almost, and if warranted, the almost almost and more.

Can those of us that tinker with our solve paths be said to be indulging in a form of T&E ?

I must admit that I have "trialed" many an idea that ended in "error." Smile

Of course it's entertainment. We'll never agree on what constitutes T&E; it's like beauty, in the eye of the beholder. I personally don't care for the ANP or Fineed XY-Wing stuff because I view it as T&E while others clearly don't. But I can say with certainty that whatever one calls it, an ANP is not satisfying to me, even though other techniques are satisfying, even though they might be viewed as T&E. It defies logic.

Having said that, this puzzle took me six moves, about 600% of what others took. Embarassed
