I didn't notice a one-step either. After an X-Wing on 4, there's an XY-Wing on 798 with the 4 having been removed from the pivot cell (r9c7). |

I took the xy-wing scenic route only because x-wings are usually the last basic technique I pull out of my kit - hate the scan. Quite interesting results. A 459 wing with pivot inr3c5, then came two 249 wings having the identical pivot in r7c5, and lastly a 479 wing with pivot in r9c7 caved it in. |

I avoided the xy-wing route - too hard to find. I used an ER on 4 and an x-wing on 9. Scenic is in the eye of the beholder! |

I'm pretty much a newbie but am beginning to see the X-Y wings with the forums help. What is an ER, please? |

Hi Julian it's an Empty Rectangle. A search ought to provide a better explanation than I can. |

I also enjoyed the "xy-wing scenic route".
(kuskey, your post implies 4 are necessary. But of the "two 249 wings" I found that, though one of them was necessary, the other didn't pinch anything. That is to say, 3 xy-wings.) |

I resolved and obtained the same result - even uncovered a couple of unproductive xy-wings. I may have missed something in the cleanup between xy-wings, making the second one unproductive. One of the things that makes Sudoku so interesting is that there are often multiple paths to the ultimate solution. |
