The Nightmare of March 1 is very interesting. No matter which way you go, it is dripping with unique rectangles. I think it is a great tutorial. This is the starting position:
Code: |
+----------------------+----------------------+----------------------+
| 237 2357 235 | 236 2678 4 | 9 568 1 |
| 12349 1234 239 | 5 12689 3689 | 7 468 3468 |
| 8 6 359 | 139 179 379 | 2 45 345 |
+----------------------+----------------------+----------------------+
| 36 358 358 | 69 5679 1 | 4 2 356789 |
| 1246 12458 258 | 2469 3 5679 | 1568 156789 56789 |
| 12346 9 7 | 8 2456 56 | 1356 156 356 |
+----------------------+----------------------+----------------------+
| 79 78 6 | 149 14589 589 | 158 3 2 |
| 379 378 1 | 3469 45689 2 | 568 456789 456789 |
| 5 238 4 | 7 1689 3689 | 168 1689 689 |
+----------------------+----------------------+----------------------+
|
You can solve it with basic techniques until a couple of rectangles are needed to finish. Or, you can find rectangles almost immediately.
Best wishes,
Keith |

Yep, rectangles all over the place. Eventually, I was able to use three of them en route to completion.
By the way, I like puzzles served up with candidates already filled in; sure saves a lot of grunt work! |
