Quote: | Notice the two sashimi x-wings on 3 and 7, both sharing the same cells, r14c59, and making a deletion from the same cell, r3c5. Only the sashimi x-wing on 7 is a one stepper......

If a Kraken fin is in the realm of the Advanced rating, then an equivalent solution is
Quote: | Kraken x-wing (7)r37c78 with Kraken fin (7)r5c8
If x-wing is true; r3c5<>7
If fin is true: (7)r5c8-r4c9=(7)r4c5; r3c5<>7 |

You can also see it as a Broken Wing with Double Guardian..
Broken wing is r1c6,r1c9, r4c9,r4c5,r3c5 and guardians r1c4, r9c5 eliminates (4)r3c5 and r9c3
I have yet to come across a puzzle where a Broken Wing did something different to a fish/turbot - though reading some old posts on the Players Forum it seems they do exist! |

Peter: Have you ever considered a "grouped" turbot fish? In this case, it also works as Coloring.
Code: | a:bb:c:d:e => guardian r9c5=7 true
a+c+e = Blue (conflict)
bb+d = Green
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
| 1 9 6 | b357 2 b357 | 4 8 c357 |
| 7 3 58 | 68 9 4 | 1 56 2 |

| 689 5 4 | 68 e37 689 | 2 1 d37 |
| 369 2 39 | 357 1 35679 | 8 3567 4 |
| 368 1 7 | 2 4 3568 | 56 9 35 |
|-----------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------|
| 39 8 39 | 4 6 2 | 57 57 1 |
| 5 7 2 | 9 8 1 | 3 4 6 |
| 4 6 1 | 357 @357 357 | 9 2 8 |

Danny, I do use grouping when looking at x-chains/turbots - but I haven't thought of looking for odd-length x-chains with groups. But can see it now - thanks.
What are your thoughts on Broken Wings/Guardians? Do they have utility beyond straight turbot/fish moves? |

My first introduction to "guardian cells" was in the Players' Forums in the thread on Broken Wings. There, the discussion seemed dedicated to single-digit turbot fish patterns. Considerably later, I stuck my nose into the Eureka! forum and they were talking about guardian-this and guardian-that in a completely different context. I never applied myself to decipher their use of the term.
I don't believe that I've ever used "guardian cells" in a context outside of a Broken Wing.
Regards, Danny |
